Is the factory undercoating supposed to be tacky? its like a greasy coating on my 2019.

I have a 2008 as well and the undercoating looks similar but is dry to the touch. This stuff on my 2019 rubs off on my hands like grease. This was a certified used tahoe, build date was July 18, so figure if it was supposed to cure or dry, it would have done it by now.

It should be dry. Take it back to the dealer. You shouldn’t be able to wipe it off.

My fil’s 08 tundra had a recall for frame issues ... rust rot etc... they had the truck for a week and supposedly took the bed off stripped the rust on frame and undercoated it..... this was ~2 years ago.... the undercoating they used is still tacky, greasy to touch....

That being said my 19 yuk is dry as a bone as is my 13 hoe.... although the 13 hoe is flaking off big time.

The dealer may have undercoated yours with an extra layer on top of factory stuff... its not a bad thing... especially in the salt belt..

Many newer products stay ‘wet’

There are stickers on the frame that are not coated, so they either taped them off or added on top of the new stuff. I will give them a call on Monday and see how quick they try to change the subject.

My ‘15 Yukon Denali XL undercoating is “tacky” or greasy to the touch and somewhat rubs off or smears if I rub up against it.

The wife’s ‘13 ESV is dry. Could be due to age? Who knows...

Though the tacky finish can be cumbersome when you’re under there doing work. I actually prefer it over the dry coating as it just smears instead flaking and chunking off.

Good luck on your call. Should be super productive without your vehicle in front of them as you try to describe it to the service “expert”. They’ll probably respond with; “bring it in and we’ll be happy to take a look at it for you...”

There was a white sticker that was partially coming off and hanging down on my '19 Tahoe so I reached under there to pull it off and encountered the same thing as you describe. My build date was also July '18.

I had a 2013 Black Diamond Avalanche that did not have this greasy undercoating, the frame was quite rusty (and I had taken the running boards off, so it was very visible.) It would be nice if this didn't happen to the Tahoe.

Let us know if you find anything out!

Our 01 Blazer had the same type stuff on it. I had noticed this on other S10s before and seemed like it lasted a couple years then the rust came though. I spent some time under the Blazer with cans of black spray paint, tape, and a cardboard shield, still looks real good today. I suspect this coating is some sort of waste product that they mix up mainly to get rid of it.

This is factory GM corrosion protection just leave it alone!

It will keep your frame from looking like an old chevy truck of the past when exposed to salty roads in the winter, or heavy exposure to long rainy winters. In the old days you had nothing, then the idea was to spray undercoating like you put to seal an asphalt road. This new product is like oily wax. German cars have used similar stuff for years.

My 07 is dry but it’s 12 years old. Do the new rigs come with coating? Could this tacky stuff be what the local dealer used to add to it or touch it up? The OP sounded like you can wipe it off

Cosmoline was first developed for the military for rust prevention then began being used commercially. It's similar to what you are describing. The stuff that dries tends to flake off with age. I'd guess some of the rust preventatives are dealer applied and may vary due to location.

Frames on older ones are dipped in wax like undercoating but the wax peels on a truck in northern climates where they salt the roads. Also if frame isn’t completely clean the wax doesn’t stick prior to truck assembly or if its banged against something during assembly

Is the rust proof coating only on front/middle of vehicle? I just took delivery of a 2019 tahoe and the frame on the inner rear upper area near bumper seems to be just sprayed white.

My 18 Tahoe with a build date of March 18 has the wax undercoating everywhere.

Does anyone have a photo they can upload of what this wax type coating looks like on their Tahoe? Thank you.
