Hello all,

I just bought this truck and sad to say my first post has to be on some noises it has that sound like drivetrain stuff. It is a 2006 Z71 with 58,000 on it. It is doing two things:

1) there is a rotational metallic sounding noise that seems to be coming from front left. Its most audible in the drivers seat and seems to go along with wheel speed. Doesn't sound like a wheel bearing because the noise does not change when turning or taking the load off that side for a second. (swerving etc)

2) the transmission makes a clicking noise when up shifting. Mostly when cold and it gets less common when warmed up. Just like fast repetitive click sounds until it completes the shift. Not too loud but definitely noticeable and not normal.

Any advice or info you guys have would be great. Sucks that my first post had to be on issues i have with it, but it is a nice truck! I hope it lasts a while. I believe I still have time to go back to the dealer to get their 5 year 100k powertrain warranty if its worth it. I think it was an extra 1500.00. So let me know! thanks guys!

lol Im glad there is a lot of knowledge on this forum. I think I've narrowed it to a front diff carrier bearing. Im gonna try to get them to fix it. We will see... :/

my 03 SLT does the clunk upshift sometimes. its done it since i bought it 2 years ago and its still going 128k today. my friends avalanche also does it alot worse than mine. i believe it has 147k now still going. id just go about life to be honest. and the metallic noise your hearing could be the brake pad hitting the rotor as it spins. mine did this once also it just went away as the brakes wore

edit: i personally hate extended warranties. on these trucks the only real weak link in the drive train is the transmission. and that should cost you around 1500 depending on the shop who rebuilds it. dont get me wrong im not saying its going to blow up because to be honest i dont think its going to blow under 100k unless you drive like dale Earnhardt or somethin

The rear diff side bearings were making the rotational noise. The trans is still making the clicking noise. Its like a repetitive fast clicking that's louder when cold, but almost disappears when its warmed up. Ill have to try to read more into it. I didnt go with the warranty. too many hoops to go through when I read the contract. The dealer took care of the rear diff side bearings though. Now all I hear is tire noise which is fine with me.

I read a thread where someone that had a similar problem changed the transmission filter and oil. His filter material broke and was being sucked up the tube toward the pump. It was basically starving the pump during shifting more when cold. I think I will change that out and see what it does.

just an FYI for anyone that finds this thread with a similar problem:

I had the trans flushed and a new filter installed and the problem is gone. shifts so smooth now too : )

Similar problem on my 05 Denali. Dealer said it's caused by moisture that gets in the transmission. Flushing out the fluid fixed it.
