Wrong section, but I know you have to buy the 2003+ dash surround and do a little modification the AC controls to get the double-din to fit. Very possible though.

This is correct. You have to raise the AC controls about a half an inch to close the gap between the HU and AC controls if you have an 01-02 and by the 03+ dash.

I had an '01 Z71 Tahoe and the 01-02 model tahoe's have a 1.5 DIN whereas the 03-06 (same body style, different dash) have a 2 DIN. I first bought the 03+ dash but didn't want to modify the AC controls so I said screw it and cut my original dash perfectly for a double DIN and got it touched up at my local audio/auto shop to make it look more "stock"... it didn't look bad considering I cut into my dash... It BARELY fit my AVIC-D3 at the time but looked as factory as an aftermarket HU could get.

no you dont... just simply trim your current dash.
a 03 dash will block the ash tray and most of the 3 power outlets

yea.. you def dont need 03 parts. i used some spacer bolted to the side of the deck. the mount the radio lock keys fron the factory deck to the spacers. then locked it in the dash just like factory. you will need to do some measuring to get it centered correctly. then you can trim the dash bezal so the radio can fit through

dont have a write up and i no longer have the tahoe but i just went to harbor freight bout a dremel for $25 and trimmed it until it fit. put some egg crate foam under it and made a little bracket. worked perfect. re-painted the dash b/c it looked a little tacky . i had an alpine w205
