Revisiting this topic with a new twist.
Our blower motor was making slight bearing clicks when turning the truck so is presumed to be ailing. Other than the noise it was varying speed in response to system calls.
It developed a vibration and loud hum but I found a crack at the outer edge of the squirrel cage.

I ordered and installed an aftermarket VDO/Continental unit. After installing it the new blower speed as displayed on the control panel was less than half of the oem (failing or not). Also it is not responding much to the system call when the temperature setting is raised or lowered. It does respond to manually changing the speed setting though. I also noticed that the rear blower response to automatic speed calls are not working since installing it.

I can buy and replace the controller/resistor but would like to know if there is a test for that unit before I waste my effort in the event that it is the new front VDO blower causing the disruption.

Also, are the squirrel cage fans available separately?
