    Replacing the battery in the BMW would require registering the new battery with the vehicle. Easily done with a capable scanner. Registering it resets charging adaptations and possibly a few other data points within the vehicle's systems.

    When you're testing voltage, are you using a local ground or directly on the negative battery post (not the battery cable connector, the post itself)?

    Charm.li seems to indicate that the vent comes out with the headlight switch, if I'm reading it correctly. Or am I looking at the wrong vent...

    Usually just a digital voltmeter would work. If you want a graph, you could try an inexpensive handheld scope, but it's not necessary for the measurement. He uses the graph for clarity for the viewers.

    DOD isn't the technology used in the GMT900s, it's AFM (Active Fuel Management).

    RA lists the OE thermostat for your year as 189 deg. Mine has the clutch fan and has an OE thermostat, and full operating temp varies between 200 and 210 deg F.

    I would advise against having a valve in the heater hose on these. The water pump will fight that and might be a contributor to the overheating. The water pump needs to circulate coolant through the heater core, and that will help cool the engine.

    Look up the OE thermostat opening temp to see what the minimum temp should be. If the thermostat is working properly the temp will go up from there, depending on the condition of the cooling system.

    2004 should have a clutch fan, not electric, unless it's been converted. Is the clutch engaging when it warms up, and are both halves of the fan shroud in place and intact?

    Our sniffer test is always done with the vehicle doing varied rpms on a treadmill. The plain OBD test is just that, nothing in the tailpipe.

    Well, we have a temporary change of fuel, since my son just did a round trip to Dallas to help a friend move, and haul a trailer. We didn't want him to have to try to keep using E85 so he used premium all the way, since that's the canned tune that's on it and the mpgs towing are bad enough...
