Hello all!
Just curious if any of you have experience with the P1098 code? I’ve only found limited information here on the forum, however I did seem to find additional info on other various websites regarding the code.
Yesterday night, after start up, the CEL illuminated. Called onstar and they sent me my diagnostic report which indicated the P1098 code was present. No additional symptoms at this time. After some research it seems this is an issue with the coolant control valve. There’s a bulletin on it stating a software update could cure it, but from what I read this never seems to solve the issue.
I plan to call the dealership today, however my Yukon is a 2021 with 55k miles on it. I’m a little worried from what I read that this particular problem isn’t covered under the power train warranty.. and potentially cost $2-$3k to fix, yikes!
This sounds like it’s a common issue now with these LM2s, and is a result of poor manufacturing. So unfortunate.
Moreover, I’m curious if any of you experienced this issue and if the dealer covered under the powertrain warranty?

I had this code pop up today on my 2022 Yukon XL 3.0L - 77K miles. I had to continue driving about 20 minutes in order to get home. Trans temp was about 190, which seemed a bit high, but not crazy. Engine Temp stayed the same. No problems, other than the limp mode / reduced acceleration - was able to get on the freeway, which was the only way home.

Pulled the code - P1098 - and then found the coolant reservoir low, but not empty.

Has anyone experienced this being an issue of low coolant?

I documented it, reset the code and filled the coolant. Will keep any eye on it, but wondered if others have seen this.

You might as well plan on getting it into your dealer. The coolant control valve is or will imminently fail. It is one of the 3.0's only weaknesses as this valve was made with some cheap interior parts that fail prematurely. I believe it is covered under warranty, but I've also heard some noise that they are NOT calling it part of the drivetrain here and there...

This is the truth and ultimately the case for me as well. I ended up taking mine to the dealer and had the valve replaced under powertrain warranty. My dealer gave no stink about it. But I’ve heard others saying their dealer did not want to cover under powertrain, which is a load. If this ends up being the case you’ll have to fight them or simply go to another dealer.

~~I never had the low coolant problem though. I vaguely remember reading somewhere about low coolant being the culprit of a P1098 code.. but if that’s the case.. where the heck did the coolant go? Do you have a leak?

I haven't noticed a leak. Maybe it has always been low? I will report back as I put some miles on it and see if the code comes back.

Well, code and CEL came back yesterday. Happened in a relatively cold condition. While driving, Trans temp was a bit higher than usual, but still around 190. I did eventually get the reduced acceleration pop up. After 3-4 short trips, the CEL went off, whcih was before I could pull the code. P1098 is now showing up as an inactive code - which makes me wonder if the dealer will actually take any action?

Your coolant control valve is going out. The sensor in the primary valve gets grease and plastic bits on it from the worm gear. Describe the conditions to the dealer and they will scan it for codes. They shouldn't give you an grief over it. It's covered by the powertrain warranty.

Update on my CCV Saga...

My selling and (normally) servicing dealer confirmed that they didn't have the part and would not order it until I brought it in for diagnostics. They said that they would need the vehicle for 3 days to diagnose, that is even with making an appointment. Made an appointment with another local dealer who said 1-2 days for diagnostics. Second dealer took just over a day to confirm the CCV but part is on backorder with no ETA and that the car was "undriveable". I would be 4th in line for this part at this dealership (with the longest already having waited 30 days) and 7th in line for a loaner car, but that GM would cover $44 per day for a rental.

I went on a hunt for the part. The original dealer said that while they could see that there were some in inventory at other dealers, they couldn't see what other dealers had them - sounded fishy to me. I went hunting for the part and had great luck with some of the smaller dealers helping me out and telling me what other dealers showed them in stock. At the 3rd dealer, I found 2 in stock that were not allocated to customers. They would not sell one to me however, as they were holding them for them to eventually do the repairs themselves. I did notice that both dealers were owned by the same nationwide network, so I hoped that they might be able to work something out. I was wrong!

After again confirming availability of the part at the newest dealer, I went and picked up the vehicle from the original dealer and drove it 30 miles to the new dealer. The drive was almost 100% freeway, so I locked out 10th gear and drove 65 mph. just to be safe. Documented temps and highest trans temp was 172 - No CEL or reduced acceleration warning, so all good there.

Fingers crossed the repair goes well from here. Only downside is that I had to pay the $200 "diagnostic fee" at the original dealership. Going to try to get GM to reimburse that, but don't have a ton of hope on that. Anyone have any luck with that?
