rattling noise 07 tahoe

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum,
I have a 2007 tahoe 4wd, everytime I accelerate, it makes a rattling noise. Almost like something is loose. The dealership said it was my driveshaft. But I wasn't convinced, so I briefly had a local shop just listen to the noise, he said it could be the u joint or something in the tranny. My warranty expires in august, so I'm just not sure what to do now. I don't want my tranny to go out after august. I have 80k+ miles on it. Anyone had similar issues?

Yes! I've posted about this before. I didn't get too many responses, but someone thought it might be a "knock" that I'm hearing. After upping the octane, I really don't think that's it. I suspect I'm hearing what you're hearing...

What type of rattling noise? High pitched sqeaky rattling, metal to metal rattling, etc.?

Probably a u-joint.... Just take it to the dealership and tell them to figure it out and fix it. Like you said, it's under warranty. It's on them at this point.

Mine is kind of a metallic clanking, usually brought on by lugging the engine (up a hill, for instance), and also higher in the RPM range. It's not a squeaking, and doesn't sound like it's brought on by vibration. Sounds more like a sound based on something "shuddering," if that makes any sense.

I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing this issue. Did you ask your GM dealer to look at the U-Joint or the transmission?

No, not yet. I like to know as much about these things as possible before having the dealer look at it. I can just see the report now: "Unable to duplicate conditions," or "Checked other vehicle -- condition is normal."

Its almost like a loose heatshield would sound...but I know that's not the case... if I had to better describe it, I would say more of a "spinning/rattle"
But I will take it in, the only thing that kinda sucks is that the dealership will charge me 115 bucks if the "problem" is not covered under the powertrain warranty..
I will keep you guys posted.

Yep, I'll say that the same sound I'm hearing. Is yours acceleration related? Mine is.

Make sure your tranny fluid dipstick (the red one) is not rattling against the firewall. Sometime that causes it.

I had this issue for awhile come to find out the D pillar on the right side had one of the clips break off and was rattling against the back glass. Fixed it with some 3m double sided tape real fast. Easy simple fix. Easy to check too, remove the tail light then remove the D pillar, just pull it comes straight out.

Mine sound is coming from under the truck/the engine bay. It's not an interior sound.

FWIW, you can jack up the rear of the tranny yourself, just a bit, and see if the tranny mount is separated

obviously, don't jack up the center of the pan, or you will crush the pan, and dont' jack it TOO MUCH, or you can rip it. just a bit of upward tension in a solid area of the tranny.


it's an upper and lower shell, with a hunk of rubber in the middle, and they usually come apart in trucks over time (i guess from working?)

not sure if these SUV's work enough to hurt them?

i do NOT think this would be metallic, like a heat shield...this would be thuddy & heavy.



FWIW part 2: pull the jack cover out, and look in there. my SUV was used, and had two tire chocks in there, and there were rattling ALL OVER back there.

I had the EXACT same problem so maybe I have a solution for you. Metal rattle sound? Mine sounded like it was coming from the passengers side of the engine bay. Happend every time I accelerated decently hard or anytime there was a load on the engine such as going up a hill/grade. Problem was very difficult to diagnose because it only did it under these conditions so obviously I cant open the hood and listen for where its coming from since it only did it while I was accelerating. Went through the usuals, exhaust manifold heat shields, etc... nothing fixed it.

So... turned out to be the A/C lines that run along the passenger side of the engine and then downwards between the back of the engine and the firewall. The lines were rattling against each other then the engine would torque up apply pressure on the A/C lines. You can either manually try and separate the lines a little father apart from one another by sticking something in between them such as a thick piece of foam or something similar. Worked for me and now I can beat on the truck giving it full throttle and no noise! (Still get all the inside rattles, just no strange rattles coming from under the hood)

I think the ac lines are going to be the culprit. I looked at them at lunch, and they're are definitely touching at at least one place high up near the fire wall. So, I wedged something between them temporarily there. But it looks like they turn to the left at the bottom of their downward run, and there's a small heat shield there. So, the lines could be rattling against each other AND against the heat shield, too.

I really think this is going to be the source of the noise. I'll report back.

so today i took it to another local shop, I happen to know the owner from High School, so he looked at it for free...
so he could not duplicate the noise, so when I went to pick it up, we took a ride around the block, we went back to the shop and popped the hood, he determined that it is a knocking noise from the engine.... he said its almost "normal" with wear and tear. Its not really loud, its happens when I accelerate... anybody familier with this?

All I did was separated them a little further by hand just by spreading the lines farther apart with slight pressure. I was doing this right in the back of the engine where the lines are on top of the engine and then make the downward turn between the back of the engine and firewall. This worked as a temporary solution and the noise would slowly come back so I put a thick piece of foam that i cut to size in between the lines at this same spot and it has so far worked for me....

Putting some rubber between the upper portion of these lines hasn't cured me of the noise. Didnt get any isolators down lower on the lines yet, but I'm beginning to think that these aren't causing the noise. I think it could be contact between two heat shields low on the engine block, maybe (you can see them through the front left wheel well). Still need to do more investigating...
