GM dropping CarPlay

Personally I think this is a dumb decision. Clearly they are just going to launch a subscription based replacement system.

That being said, i dont know what carplay truly delivers that bluetooth doesnt. I guess not having to use the in-car google maps is a benefit, but there hasnt been anything revolutionary with Carplay that makes it something I cant live without.

Also, why does a car have to have its own cellular modem. Why can't it just tether off your mobile phone's connection and thereby not need a subscription service / its own cellular modem? (The answer is obvious... GM wants the subscription revenue.)

Or GM could offer thier new all in one but still have the option if you want to use the other two, it's not like they have to keep up with the programing of apple and android. Yeah I know they want to shut them out and charge you ever increasing subscription just like cable tv.

You couldn't GIVE me a vehicle without Apple CarPlay. My current Tahoe will be THE LAST GM vehicle I will buy. I've owned 8 different General Motors SUVs as well as a Corvette. A survey done by Motor Trend magazine says that 70% of car buyers will not even CONSIDER a vehicle without Apple CarPlay. It's obvious that General Motors does not realize how loyal Apple customers are to the brand. In fact, Apple customers are probably the most loyal group of consumers ever. It's just WAY easier for me to give up my Buick, than my iPhone. Lots alternatives exist, Ford Expedition, Jeep Wagoneer, and Nissan Armada and Lexus. The NON-Hybrid Lexus LX V6 looks interesting. The Jeep appeals to me because you can permanently disable the Daytime Running Lights in the set up menu. Goodbye, General Motors.

We do lots of road trips and CarPlay is huge for us.

We are going to be downsizing whenever I get around to selling my boat. Looks like this is my last GM vehicle. Accura or Lexus for us.

Do you realize that cable television operators are only pass-throughs for programming content? The programmers increase their price to the operators, so the operators need to increase subscription prices to make a profit. Same thing most retailers do...

And the programmers generally control what programming channels go on a certain tier. It's generally a take-it-or-leave-it transaction.

Yeah I don't feel sorry for the pass-through cable co, why is it whenever I called them to shut if off suddenly they could lower my monthly price? If they could lower it why did they raise it in the first place? Greed.
My point was with GM if thier new product is so great why not let me have a choice of whether I want to pay for their great prodcut or use a free one? Prolly because their great product doesn't do anything different than the others they just want a new way to eek some more subscription money and block you from freedom of choice.

Yeah and several years ago Toyota said they had no intention of bringing CarPlay to their vehicles… It’s now in every model they sell…

The only way GM could make sense of that move is if they were getting a kickback from Google (selling insights and user data etc) to do it. How about that? Google is more integrated than ever in the latest GM infotainment systems you say?

The infotainment in my ‘26 is good, but i still use CarPlay plenty. Off-roading apps like OnX etc I use weekly, MyRadar as well among several others. Also super nice to have the GM Google Maps on one display and Waze on the other display now that the center cluster supports it.

That's not been my experience at all. I find CarPlay to respond virtually instantly. No more than a 10th of a second delay when I press buttons.

CarPlay can deliver on some key things. For instance, my company uses Microsoft Teams. It is super easy to join a conference call in the vehicle using CarPlay. There is not a Microsoft Teams available in the GooglePlay store for Android Automotive (the system my 2022 Yukon Runs.). There is a Micrsoft Teams app in the Google Play store for android devices, it is just not enabled for the Automotive instance.
I am also an Apple Music Subscriber. Apple Music is not Enabled on the Android Automotive version in our trucks, although it is available to those w/ Android Tablets and Phones.
Lastly, for Apple Users with Calendars, Mail, etc...you get all your daily reminders, automatic driections to events on your calendar, etc delivered to you if you have your calendar set up. You get notifications (at least the ones you allow to go through when on drive focus), etc.

I will definitely miss it, and I would expect several commercial/small business owners will too...these will need to be replicated or I view it as a loss.

Yes, I could convert to Android on my phone, and then link all this in a Google Calendar and to a Google account...then get some native support back...but, I could also just go to a different brand vehicle...

The issue isn't so much "what" infotainment system they are using, it's if the user is going to be forced to use the OEM system (by removing the carplay/android auto functionality), then there will be some type of service fee attached to it (internet capability).

Whereas the carplay/AA interface is "free" to use...and sure there are those that will say it's not free, by having to pay for your cell phone service, but if you aren't already paying for use of a smart phone, then this conversation isn't for the flip phone crowd.

The internet access that comes with GM vehicles has really fluctuated over the past few years. Go back a couple of years and GMC added $1500 to the price of their vehicles for 3yrs of service...a literal line item on the options on the window sticker, while Chevys were coming standard with 3 months of service, so the speed limit sign on the dash and the google interface were useless once the service ran out....

We just picked up a 2026 Z71 tahoe and it came with 8yrs of connectivity service - so a complete 180 by GM. Could see GM banking that providing the connectivity for free, owners will gradually start to lean towards not using carplay/android auto, because, well, the OEM system works...not the OEM interface worked for a few months and stopped when the trial ran out.
