I haven't read through this entire thread but can anyone confirm one simple question - does passing a pico scope test and getting 0-W40 oil absolutely prevent an engine failure in the future? We can now be confident it'll never happen? Or are we still rolling the dice when driving these cars with 6.2L?

Still rolling the dice. I believe passing the inspection means that although your engine was produced within in the window of "bad" engines, the pico scope is not picking up enough noise to indicate that engine replacement is necessary. The fact that GM is offering a special extended 150k mile warranty on an engine that passes inspection would seem to indicate that they believe the engine could still be subject to failure.

Looks like I'm trading in my 2024 Silverado HC with 6.2L. Can't have that hanging over my head on long family trip. Thanks!

Personally I think the knock test is eye wash. I would be very interested to hear from somebody that is getting an engine change based on the knock test alone. Anybody…….?
Anybody?

Sure thing. Will be interesting to see if/how this recall affects trade-in values for vehicles with the 6.2L. For example, assuming you get the recall work completed and your engine passes inspection before you trade it in, will you experience a haircut on the trade-in value, given that the engine could still be "bad"? Hopefully not, but who knows.

Well just received the letter today from GM on the recall, what is interesting though is apparently they will be sending a second letter. It states that as soon as parts are available they will send another letter to then make an appointment with my dealer for the inspection.

I just got my letter too. I am confused tho. How is it some folks are getting inspections done? Was/Is their letter than what we got? The letter does seem to imply that I am NOT To Bother the dealership until I get the second letter????

So, Next week I am supposed to do a 500 mile trip to Florida. I don't understand why I am not allowed to at least get that 'test'? Or is it because if my engine does not pass then GM is liable to keep my Tahoe and then they would have to give me something else to drive until parts are available; in the mean time if I break down somewhere in 'TimBucToo' so be it.

You’d give up a 150k mile warranty. Any car can fail and none will warrant an engine that long for free. Keep rolling the dice and sell it at 145k.

I believe this was already posted earlier, but here is a video showing the actual inspection procedure (with a passing result, of course):

Sweet! Nice that someone has uploaded a video of the actual test being done.

Maybe they’ve already run out of the initial allotment of engines slated for replacement per this recall?

I got the same letter today as well. I have a 2023 Tahoe. Maybe they are taking care of the earlier (2021-2022) model years first? What year is yours?

My exact issue -- I'm two weeks out from a 1,000 mile trip (one way)... I've already done this same trip twice without any issues in my 2023 Yukon. Life was better when I didn't know about the recall.
Guessing, if do have a problem, OnStar or GMC will have to come get me. Parts of my trip are fairly desolate too. No engine means no AC either while I wait, suffering in this heat. On the bright side, I use Cruise Control for most of the trip, which has got to be eaiser on the engine? Running at approx 1,750 rpm / 78 mph.

Hey, side note, watchimg the tests -- is 2,000 rpm with NO LOAD ok for an engine? I suspect not, glad it's only 45 seconds / 1 minute.

How do I chose the best Dealer for the job? 1 GMC and 2 Chevy within 5 miles. Go out 15-20 miles and I've got 2 more GMC and a few more Chevy dealers. Not a big fan of my local dealers.
No Letter yet....

What sounds did I hear in the replacement motor? Same as the last two motors before they failed.
- Keep in mind GM V8's used to sound like this 2017 6.2L tune, no idea what's "normal" 2021 onward
- My video at 3:20-3:50 hear valve racket (like this vid) while cylinder on, then nothing with the cylinder off (DFM)
- My video at 2:58-3:08 hear potential rod-knock (like this short)

What was my oil choice? 0W-40
- I requested 0W-40, but the spec called for 0W-20, they were fine with 0W-40 no extra charge
- Pro-Tip: Change 0W-40 more frequently (I'll do every 3K). The additives needed for +20 cause it to degrade faster (sources here, here, and here).

Did I have a Pico Test? Yes.
- I asked to test the old motor as baseline
- The old motor passed the test
- The test did not pick up the stuck-lifter diagnosis they found the month before, don't know why

Did I get Warranty Extension? No.
- Replaced motors DO NOT GET EXTENDED WARRANTY
- Motors passing pico test get the 150K 10yr extended warranty.
- Mine passed the pico test, but my motor serial number was in the recall-replace list, so no extension for me

Did I file a Lemon Law Case? Yes, 8 months in.
- I started lemon law case with motor #2, kept adding to it with 7 service followup visits over 5 months
- Two weeks before this recall, my motor #2 is diagnosed with lifter failure, but GM denies warranty repair approval
- One week before the recall GM offered 10% (-3% fees) settlement, I said "no, the new motor is already failing"
- Recall happens, motor #3 goes in, send docs to GM
- GM said "Motor #3 was a recall so it doesn't count. We'll re-offer the 10% settlement"
- Attorneys advised to take the settlement or file a personal lawsuit (likely last 1-3 years)
- Other option is to join a class action suit, but payouts are low (average <$2k + free onstar in 2010s)

Same engine regardless if you choose GMC or Chevy. The only difference I would see is any reviews you might read online of any dealers in your area. The process itself of testing, assuming it's done the same at any dealer, won't make a lick of difference where it is performed. Ask around if you have any friends or family that have dealt with any of these dealers.

Or, they've run out of the new oil fill cap? :D
Funny you mention that. I ordered a different cap with the 5W30 and Mobil 1 across the middle after switching mine over to that weight. Two months later it's still on backorder, so it's very possible the vendor is behind. :)

You had the pico test done, and failed? If so, sounds like you're the only one in this thread who has failed the test so far.

Cynical me thinks that the parameters of the test are such that there are going to be very few failures/engine replacements.

Lucky you.

I just got my letter today as well; but my letter reads like the one previously posted -- GMC has no parts, and will send a Second letter once parts are available.
Parts? What Parts? Engine? 0-40w oil isn't available? or the elusive oil filler cap. (duck tape and a Sharpie works, in the short term  )

So I hope I don't get stranded somewhere; I'm just gonna keep on driving it.
