Hey all! Does anyone else here try to use two car seats in the rear of a 2 door?

My wife and I just had our second child, and there are times when I'll need to haul both kids, and they'll both be in car seats for a while. However, the design of the seat belts in my '95 2-door prohibits me from installing more than one car seat.

The two outside seat belts with shoulder belts have the spring-tension belts on both ends. Only the center lap belt has the proper adjusting strap on it. The car seat manufacturers say that I shouldn't install car seats in the spring loaded style seat belts, and I can see why: there is no way to tighten the car seats to the vehicle seats. The only time the seat belts lock is in the time of collision or sudden stopping. So, in my 2-door, the only place allowed to install a car seat is in the middle of the rear seat.

So, has anyone modified the rear seats, seat belts, or installed some sort of latch system to install more than one car seat?

(And no, I don't want to get a 4 door. 90% of my driving in this vehicle is by myself. They didn't make a 4 door diesel, and I don't want a Suburban!!)

Thanks!

Casey

You dont have to worry about that the 4-door has the same seat-belt system... - I would try going to a junk yard n getting another lap belt and try to somehow find away of mounting it in the back seat and move the other to the other side maybe... Im sure it can be done

Well, I feel like a doofus! All along I was sure that the rear seat belts were just like the front: that both ends of the belts were spring-tensioned. Well, I was wrong! I took another look last night, and the rear seats have the standard belts with only the shoulder part having the spring tension. Car seats are no problem with that style.

I feel red in the face now!

Dont "feel red in the face" its all good. You're looking for info for the safety of your children.
My baby seat came with a very long latch and adjustable strap that I reach over the back seat and hook that to the cargo loop right behind the back seat. I can really crank down to make sure its not going anywhere. I also put some asss into cranking the shoulder belt. I'm actually trying to figure out how to use a ratchet strap (or two) for a little extra security.

Do you have any pics of your 2dr? Diesel to, bad ass.

Heh, I bought a '99 yukon 4dr a few weeks ago specifically to haul the kiddo around and not have to mess around with putting him in the backseat of a 2dr vehicle and I think the purchase has already paid for itself. I'm not quite sure of the differences between the older style interior of your '95 and my '99, but you should be able to just pull the belt all the way out and it will start "clicking" when going back in to lock the belt in place. Also, when I fold my seats up, there are two anchor points under the two outside seats, but they don't work too well with the Graco carseat I had or the new air head restraint style seat I just put in there since there isn't quite enough clearance for the buckles.

I'm with ya on the dueling car seats in the back of a 2dr...my oldest can crawl in and buckle himself up now but it's still a little rough carrying him out when he's passed out :sleepy10:
