2025 Diesel orders opened

I would but the fuel economy on the 5.3L just makes no sense to me unfortunately
I did the math on fuel cost and after you adjust for relative cost of diesel, higher cost for oil changes (2qts more), def, and fuel filters, extra cost of diesel engine and bucket seats I don’t really want and I came out with maybe only saving 1-2k over 125k miles. Also, my trade in will need tires and brakes before too long and we really wanted a bench seat so we can get that now too.

yea. My savings is bigger than that. I did similar math. Diesel here is really close to regular gas cost. Plus I drive a ton for work and the bucket seats are something I really wanted so I wouldn’t save there

At the same time I totally understand your frustration and deciding to move on. The way Chevy has handled this is getting really frustrating and definitely shying me away from staying committed to this order and probably won’t order any chevys after this

In case it's helpful to anyone on the fence, I attached my pros and cons along with the cost analysis. In my case with the Z71 4x4 assuming current fuel prices in southern Wisconsin, the gasser will cost me an estimated 2K more over 125K miles. The 5.3 has been around a long time and every dealer has parts/has worked on them and it doesn't seem like it would take much of an emissions issue or extended need for rental car to easily eat up that difference. Also, if you're a long hauler you need to factor in that costly timing belt replacement at 150-200K miles where you have to pull the transmission. There's a lot of political effort currently focused on reducing the cost of fuel so depending on how that goes it will matter even less. Don't get me wrong, I still think the diesel is really cool and would've gotten it, just done waiting for the possible marginal benefit it might produce over a 6-7 year period of time. I'm coming from a Ford F150 EcoBoost that is more boost than eco and currently gets 2MPG less than my friend's truck of same year/model with the good old 5 liter V8.

Your maintenance costs are way high but use whatever you think. Oil is 5.60 a qt. at wally world and DEF goes much further unless you are towing. For us, the ability to 600+ miles on a tank is useful and avg. hwy/city mileage will out strip the 5.3 by +/-10 mpg (I'm at 25 city and 31 hwy @70 mph.)

Not arguing with that - my estimates don’t assume diy oil changes. Agree longer range would’ve been nice! Either way the question about how to most cost effectively operate a 75-110k SUV is a fun first world problem to work through with you guys!

I wish you guys the best but I’m switching my order to a 5.3 - need something before next school year
I may switch my order as well, but keeping the 3.0.
I drove a GMC XL yesterday, the big infotainment screen in the middle looks better in person than I thought it would.

I like the look of the Yukon better but had similar issues with the options - didn’t want power folding running boards in Wisconsin or rear media system which was required w diesel if u wanted a sunroof.

Yea I thought the same but the equivalent gmc model was $18k more. Just wasn’t worth it to me for things I didn’t want

See those are the reasons the 3.0 is a must for me. I road trip with little kids and having the range to just keep driving when they fall asleep is so nice

Also, to support my estimates on fuel mileage, here's what i found on Fuelly.com for the LM2 which shows about a 7.5 MPG spread on average - while some do seem to get 31 it seems like the mean is around 24-25 combined.

I would say that the absolute 3.0 avg is about 24-26 ish. But primarily because we are in town more. I've seen 20 in the dead of winter cold, and it's all time high was 34'ish if you keep it around 60-65 and not bucking a headwind. Previous to my diesels, I had a 5.7 RAM Hemi and it wouldn't get 14 mpg with a wind behind it. It was a 100.00 a week habit and you could literally watch the gauge drop on every trip you took. Was a solid vehicle other than that though.... That solved it for me.

Wednesday we took a whirlwind trip from far Western NY to Lake George NY. Mostly express way but some 2 lane. Also hilly going up rt 88. Ran with the cruise set at 74. The trip was 842 miles, avg was 28.4 mpg. This was in my 2023 diesel Suburban..with 30,000 miles. Love that baby diesel.

We road trip as well with kids. The range is totally intoxicating. We can almost complete our trip from NW Oregon to the California coast (Paso Robles) on one tank. The only reason you NEED to stop is for a bathroom break and then you end up filling up while you're there, if needed.

If you got a trick to get them to not have to go to the bathroom for 650 miles, PLEASE SHARE :)

Ditto. Either late night driving or transfer them to the car super early in the morning. They usually all fall back asleep. By the time they’re up and ready for breakfast is about when I need a bathroom break myself. Nice way to knock out a couple hundred miles of the trip.

Looks great man! That was our 2nd choice color. Looks really nice with the darkened ultimate trim. Enjoy it! Mines coming Wednesday! Gonna be a long 5 days lol!
Its so worth the weight. This is my first diesel. Its accelerates so smooth that I dont realize I'm speeding. I cant wait to put some real highway miles on it!
