Mods to help MPG?? - 2022 Z71 Tahoe

Just purchased a 2022 Z71 Tahoe. Put 295/60R20 tires on it (34.5”) and a 3” ready lift. It has completely destroyed our MPG. Around 12.5 mpg. I’m getting better mileage in my Ram 1500 with 35’s and a 6” lift. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to help? Looking at potentially putting a chip/programmer on the Tahoe to help. We need to get back up to around 15-16 mpg.

I'm thinking that the heavier tires and the increased air resistance due to the lift may be negatively impacting your gas mileage. I doubt that any installed devices will significantly improve your gas mileage. Unfortunately, the most effective method to increase gas mileage is to better manage your foot on the gas pedal.

Not many "mods" are going to drastically improve fuel economy.

12.5 MPG seems quite low. What engine does your truck have?


City/State you live in?
How much city/stop and go are you in?
Do you remote start and allow the truck to warm up?
Have you confirmed the operating temperature is typically around 205F? If the thermostat is soft and the engine is running cool, your fuel economy will suffer drastically.

Keep in mind when the engine is idling and the truck is not in motion, it gets EXACTLY 0 MPG which is then averaged into any distance the truck travels.

When on the highway what is your typical speed?

Bring up the MPG Average dash display and set it to 50 Mile Average and watch the instantanous MPG you are typically getting.

Take a picture of the dash after 50 miles and post it for reference.

Is this mileage revelation after several tanks of gas or just looking at the DIC for a few minutes???

What did you expect by adding all this weight and drag to your truck???

Aside from the added weight and wind drag. Cold weather affects mileage as well, if you live in a cold weather state. i average about 16.5 mpg in the summer months and 14.5 to 15 mpg in the winter without idling time.

Disable engine Stop-Start will improve gas mileage. There's a couple of kits to do this. I like the one that goes behind the dash.

What is the gearing and have you manually calculated the MPG? I’m wondering if the bigger tires has messed with the final drive ratios causing and drop in mileage or… someone else can correct me, if the computer hasn’t been changed to account for the larger diameter tires, the truck is getting confused on distance traveled and fuel being used.

Would love to understand the science behind your statement. Understand that while the engine is running and the vehicle is not moving, your fuel ecomony will be EXACTLY 0 MPG. Averaging this into your economy per full tank of fuel, it can add up. We can debate all day long how much fuel may be saved, there will be a savings, however, there are a lot of variables.

While the Auto Stop/Start feature can save fuel, there are other negatives and I prefer not to deal with this feature and it is either turned off or disabled on my vehicles. I am not looking for 30 MPG out of a 6000 lb brick with a V8, if I wanted good fuel economy I would have purchased a very different vehicle.

Hmm i don’t think it is in reference to actual MPG.. which obviously would be 0 at idle because.. you can not get miles per gallon if you are going zero miles an hour. **BUT** I have heard that the fuel needed to start an engine is more than what is burned idling for the typical light cycle duration.. and if that’s true, his statement makes sense in a way.

I have no science to back this statement up. i am sure that others more educated on that subject could confirm or refute .

Posts like this kill me, people go out and spend 3-500 bucks or more to try and get better fuel mileage but what they don't see is let's say you get 15mpg and spend 500 bucks on something that gets you 2-3 more mpg's which is never going to happen do you know how long it would take just to recover the money you spent just for 3 more mpg's? Just off the top of my head I figured it up once and just to get 2 or 3 mpg and spent 400 buck on something that gave you those increases it would take like 8-10 yrs just to recover the money spent.

If you had the $ to drop on a newer truck, then the $ to throw at a lift and tires (which are known mpg killers), then I'd say live with it and enjoy it. Or.....put it back to stock.

12.5 is not that bad! My 22 sub z71 only got 13.5 even without any lift and AT tire
