Turning off rear door locks' ability to lock driver doors

2023 suburban - the rear door lock buttons control the entire car (including driver's door) - this would be fine in a car of responsible adults but not wise on GM's part in a car with several young kids who can reach the door lock from their carseat. My 4 year old kid got a good laugh locking mom out of the car at the gas station when she got out to pump gas and left the key in the car.

Does anyone know of a way to limit rear door lock buttons to only unlocking that specific door? I couldn't find anything in the vehicle infotainment settings or the manual... Hopefully I've missed something.

If she left the key in the suburban, and the kid locked it from inside, she should be able to press the little silver button on the door handle to unlock the vehicle. All 4 doors have that button that can lock/unlock doors

No, actually you can't do that...if the fob is in the vehicle and the lock switch on the inside of the door was pressed, locking all the doors, they all get locked, the security system gets enabled, and unless you unlock from inside, or with another fob, they stay locked. Perhaps ask the dealer, I am sure there must be a way, as it probably is disabled or not available on the PPV versions. Worst case, have the dealer unplug the switch, I am sure it is just a plug in harness.

I think the best you will get is to unplug the switch at that door, the one the kid is touching, not the one down inside where the locking mechanism is.

the fob is not accurate enough for any other use, you could be inside or 10 feet away it doesn't know the difference

Not true, they use multiple antennas and can tell if it is inside our outside. Don’t believe me, sit the fob in the garbage can next to your ride and try to start it…you can’t…bring the fob inside..it will starts.

You can lock a fob inside in case you have another that you want to take with you.

The owners manual tells you that it checks for a reduction in number of fobs inside the vehicle to determine if you can lock with the keyless entry button or fob button.

But hitting the lock button on the door with all doors closed will always let you lock the doors. And this is good design, it’s a safety feature. So you can sit inside the car and lock all the doors if needed.

It makes sense being able to lock the doors with the key inside (e.g. you're in a rough part of town and someone is approaching your car). Using the outside lock buttons to open the doors while a fob is inside doesn't - otherwise the creep approaching the vehicle would be able to unlock all the doors you just locked.

What seems illogical is giving the ability for the rear passengers' door lock controls to lock/unlock the entire car. Again, this would be fine in a car of responsible adults but with kids in the back, it is predominantly a liability.

There can definitely be a benefit to it though locking out a stranger is a fringe case and the liability of locking the driver out seems a bigger con than the pro of being able to unlock the drivers' door.

I agree, I am not even sure my prev gen suburban had a lock button on the rear door...But it did have a manual lock lever...guessing the inclusion of the button came from doing away w/ the manual lever.

I have had this same question/complaint, but I could not figure it out either.

I typically have 2 kids in the back that like to play with the lock and unlock buttons. I don't think that it makes sense that they can control all of the doors and not just their own.

I was wondering if you turned on the child security locks if that would override it, but I have not tried it yet.

I also could not find a switch like you have for the window controls.

Nope. Its gone. It did exist on models back to 2014.

the child door lock switch is on the drivers door switch now, but it only stops the door from being opened from the inside, does nothing to the locking switch it's self.
just pull the door panel off and unplug the switch, put door panel back on if it is of grave concern. later you can just plug it back in.
will take you a few minutes to do.
