Hey! I have 2K miles on my brand new Tahoe LT (5.3L)… and already the oil life shows at 73%…. Is that normal?

What’s the suggested mileage usage on these vehicles to get your oil changed?

I always thought synthetic oil was 7,500-10k miles

This will start a religious argument....

According to the owner's manual, change the oil before the oil life gets to 0%
Some guys/gals won't trust the oil life and want to do it sooner -- go for it if you want, it is your $$, your vehicle, and your peace of mind.
The engineers at GM have a long history w/ the oil life system...and have it calibrated to work. You won't hurt anything but your wallet doing it more often.

I ran my 2013 Suburban to 15%, then changed w/ the GM recommended Dexos oil, got 111k trouble free miles out of it. Your mileage may vary.

Does the oil life gauge/system thing in these vehicles let you input the type of oil you're using?

I still am waiting for my car...but I do know synthetic oil lasts longer than regular.

I do 5k miles on any of my regular drivers regardless if they’re using synthetic or not. If it’s not consuming a lot (5.3 engines are known to consume oil between changes) I might go over that a bit but no way I’d go to 10k.

Cars I don’t drive that much I do annually and most see 2k or less miles in a year. Oil changes are cheap compared to engine repairs caused by dirty worn out oil

No, it assumes you use the manufacturer's recommended oil grade, which for 2022 and beyond is Full Synthetic meeting Dexos 1 standard.

You can download your owner's manual form Chevy, GMC, or Cadillac at their web site and pre-read all you want, I highly recommend this.

Here is a screen snap of the relevant txt in the owners manual:

Every 10K or 6 months. I do mine late spring and late fall. Basically when I switch out my Snow Tires for Summer and vice versa.

Okay so sounds like this is normal, oil life, I thought was a proxy to oil consumption so learning that this is not the case!

Oil consumption is measured by checking the dipstick. I don't know of any vehicles that will display the amount of oil in the crankcase. The oil pressure light will illuminate when the level is so low the pump can't produce enough pressure, but by then it's usually too late and you've done irreversible damage.

The oil life monitor will show quicker use (less life ) for breakin of the engine

I would change it when you get to between 20% to 10%.

The OLM is a pretty stout program, takes many factors in to account.

Jaguar Land rover Petrol vehicles have no Dipstick and oil is checked via digital display. There are others too...

Who Doesn't use Synthetic oil in their vehicle? Is this even a thing?

Last time I got my oil changed the guy asked me if I wanted synthetic oil.

Because of the lifter scare, ive been changing mine at 4500 miles. I know color is irrelevant but around 4-4500 the oil is black so do it then. Also, decided to add a catch can and prevent all that gunk from going where the sun dont shine…

Where were ya? Like I said, at least for the 22's, Manual recommends Full Synthetic. If you were at the dealer...that is a shame...
It wasn't a tahoe....didn't get mine yet.

But yes i did get it - it was a local service guy near where I live in NY....all they pretty much do is inspections, small repairs and oil changes etc.

It was actually leased car with a year left that I don't care about...so I guess I could have opted not to

Synthetic in the '21 and several of my VW's but I also run many other vehicles and equipment (most of them diesel) using only conventional oil

I've gotten my oil changes done by the dealer for a long time now with Dexos oil at 6000 miles, ever since being told by some rookie lube tech that transmission fluid swells as it breaks down. I trust the dealer will stand behind their work if problems arise. I have the oil changed in my Bronco at a trusted shop near me because there isn't a Ford dealer near by, I use Amsoil full synthetic even though the manual calls for a synthetic blend.
