We have a 2002 Tahoe 5.3, and a 2008 Explorer 4.6. I like them both for different reasons. I find the engine differences curious, however.
Three years ago we towed our travel trailer up the Coquihala which is known to be a killer for towing. The engine temperature rose above the 212°F with the AC on, but fell back to normal once the AC was turned off and the heat on. The ambient temperature was around 95°F. Two years later we towed the same trailer up the Grapevine in CA, similar conditions. The temperature stayed below 212°F even with the AC on. In general, the 4.6L engine struggled much less with the trailer.
I find this curious because the 4.6 is a smaller displacement engine, but does have VVT and a 6 speed transmission. It gets better gas mileage as well. Does the VVT make that much of a difference? It does complicate the valve train a lot, and you have to be really on top of oil changes. (With AFM, you have to be on top of oil changes too).
I also wonder how much the 6 speed transmission helps. It does seem to help keep the engine operating in the best torque range.
Overall, I like the simplicity of the early 2000's Tahoes. Ford's engines are good, but very expensive and complicated to repair.
