The steering on my 99 Yukon has been loose and wandered quite a bit since I bought it last year. I attributed that to the front suspension being worn out at 170k miles. Also that I had the piman replaced so it was out of alignment Today, I had the upper and lower ball joints, and tie rods end replaced with Moog Problem Solvers, new tires, and an alignment. The steering is still pretty loose and seems like I have to correct more than I would like. Also it's easy to over-correct. The steering wheel is almost centered whereas before the alignment it was centered at about 2 o'clock. Now it's at about 12:30.

i understand that there are different steering boxes that I could put on this to make the steering not so "easy". Is there a way to tell which box I have, or perhaps I have the medium and it's worn. If so, can the box be rebuilt, or am I way off on this and should be lookin from a different angle?

Any help is appreciated.

I've noticed windy days really affect my Yukon, and road crowns.

Also when taking a gradual turn do you ever get a random sudden jerk from the wheel?

And not sure on the steering boxes, yours may need to be adjusted if thats an option. i cant remember what style is on these OBS's.

Autolover, You have described my symptons exactly. Mine has the adjustment nut on the top of the box. I may give that a try, but thought I'd ask about the type of box I have first.

If your getting a sudden jerk etc, could be your steering wheel speed sensor (also called a EVO sensor I think) I had gotten 1 good jerk going around a long bend, hand on wheel went from about 1 o clock to all of a sudden 3-4 o clock. Replaced sensor the next day.

Now if I could just make the wind in ND non existant... I could drive straight :p

I started getting an occasional jerking motion when my wheel is turned slightly to the right. It scared the crap out of me the other day because it hadn't happened before and I was going at a pretty good clip. I've since felt it a few times. I'm going to replace this sensor and see if it fixes my issue.

I believe it's above the pedals. On the steering column. Its a black box that wraps around the column

Yep, look down by your pedals and you'll see your steering shaft coming in from firewall. There will be a bolt and nut holding bottom shaft onto upper shaft, remove that bolt and push the lower shaft down. Don't be afraid to use some muscle with that too. That will allow the sensor to be removed and a new one installed.

Great information guys. I found the bolt. And I think I see where you are talking about. Thanks.

What does this sensor measure?

I tried to get a sensor at O'Reiley's and they don't carry them. They said that none of the after market suppliers do. Is this a dealer only-item? Anyone else run into this? Where did you get your sensor? I don't want to remove the old one until I have a replacement, in the event I break the old one in the removal process.

The sensor is called "steering wheel position sensor" and Dorman sells them part #905510 $45 at Rockauto. I looked up my truck a 1997 but it fits various makes and models Tahoes and Yukons 97-2000 and many others. Even a grand am uses these from 1995-2005.

I'm going to get mine out of a grand am at the junk yard I want to go anyway.
