What's the door striker setup?

So what do the 2 bolts on the door striker plates screw into? I know if you loosen them there is a little bit of play to position/line up the striker correctly, and that there is a plate/spacer directly under the striker plate.

Is there a threaded plate inside the body sheet metal, and what holds it in place/keeps it from dropping down if you remove the 2 striker bolts?

I believe it’s a threaded plate that sits in a pocket so it can’t fall.
