Hi everyone. I currently have a 2007 Yukon XL 4wd (5.3l). I would like a bit better towing capability, so I’m looking at a 2007 Escalade ESV with the 6.2 and 6 speed transmission. Is this a smart upgrade? Anything specific to the 6.2/6speed that I should look at or be worried about? It has 130k miles. My yukon has 230k on it and drives like a dream.

You should be good with the 2007 Escalade ESV. That year 6.2 motor does not have the AFM system activated, so you won't encounter that issue. My 2007 Yukon XL Denali, which I purchased with 125k miles, has the 6.2L motor, and it is great. Put a tune on it, and it becomes fantastic.

I have an 11 Esky and we absolutely love it. It's rated at 8300 lbs of towing capacity which is pretty darn good IMO. I haven't tuned it yet but I've heard it really wakes these motors up.

If you're towing anything heavy BE SURE you add an auxiliary transmission cooler. These trannys are pretty good but like any transmission heat is the #1 killer

You mentioned towing. 07 & 08 had a trans issue from a 2 pc (vs 1 pc) clutch fluid seal rings. The TSB below has the info. The 07 & 08 are at the age / milage where the trans has been replaced or they’re going to need to be.

If the trans has been replaced, great. Otherwise it’s an issue that towing will soon bring out. Hold out for an 09 Escalade w/ the updated trans containing one pc sealing rings, the L9H flex fuel 6.2L, non AFM motor. Running a tank of e85 occasionally also has the side effect of scrubbing the carbon deposits from the TB.

09 is also the year the Tahoe & Yuke got the same motor as the Esky and GM bumped the hp up to 403 from 385 as well as e85 and no AFM either. In 2014 when we got our 08 Denali XL AWD there was up to a 8-$9k difference between 08 & 09. Back then it was because they ran e85 and had factory BT. Now 07-09 are the ticket due to no AFM but some are still unaware of the 07/08 TSB and 09 gained e85 and BT.

Check the front diff. The one in my Denali died at 125k. AWD diff is much more expensive to fix/replace compared to the 4wd front diff.
