transfer case clicking/creeking sound

i have a 98 tahoe 4x4 with the push button. the transfer case has a clicking/creeking noise coming from it. i jacked the back up and rotated the wheels to pin point that it is coming from inside the t case. any ideas what this is? the tahoe drives like a champ and i wanna catch it before it tears other stuff up. whatever the prob is. does any one have a exploded diagram of the t case

Perhaps a loose or worn mount. Do you have the auto 4*4 with buttons one above the other or two switches side by side?

has two buttons. the are no loose mounts. the noise is in the tranfer case. i jacked it up and spinned the wheels while under the tahoe. same noise as driving.

it has the auto4x4 under the two wheel drive. and on the other switch is 4x4 and under it is low 4x4

In that case it is probably is a nv246. You can find diagram info on the same site.

Maybe slack in the chain rubbing on the case?

ya i checked the fluid in the transfer case the other day to make sure it wasnt that. first thing i thought of. lol when ever it stops feeling like hell outside im gonna take the t case out. been 100 degrees out for the past couple weeks.

Hate to tell ya but whatever it ends up being, prolly time for a rebuild. Or if you search online I bought one years ago NEW GM for $250 shipped, some company out of Wisconsin.

well i dont know if it from the ticking in the t case or it just the tranny but today i put it in reverse and bang!!! there went reverse, lol.... will only go forward now and it slips coming out 1st gear. thats my luck. didnt even look at it just parked it. sometimes you cant win. lol... any sugestions peps???

im gonna drop the trans and t case soon. what trans is in this 98 tahoe? i see that alot of peps have to rebuild there trans in these, are the transmission that bad in them? how many miles are they good for? my luck ill have to rebuild both t case and trans. lol

could this also make it slip while in drive. cause it was slipping after that happened.

You have the 4L60E i believe, sorry but you're ******, time to rebuild both while they are out.
The sunshell splines prolly got ground out or the band broke. Before reinstall flush out/ replace the trans cooler and lines if you have it equipped.

You have a 4l60e and the 2-4 band wraps around that thing. It is the one friction device that switches modes when going from 1st to 2nd.

T-case out first then in last. Print this out before the pictures change.

Transfer Case Assembly Replacement Removal Procedure

1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the transfer case shields.
3. Remove the front propeller shaft.
4. Remove the rear propeller shaft.
5. Remove the vent hose from the transfer case.
6. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor electrical connectors.
7. Remove the electrical connectors from the transfer case motor/encoder.
8. Remove any wiring harness from the transfer case.
9. Support the transfer case with a transmission jack.

1. For vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, remove the six nuts securing the transfer case and bracket to the transmission.
2. Remove the transfer case.

• • Start by pulling the transfer case straight back from the transmission.
  • After the transfer case is pulled out from the transmission turn and lower the transfer case.

1. For vehicles equipped with a automatic transmission, remove the six nuts securing the transfer case and bracket to the transmission adapter.
2. Remove the transfer case.

1. Remove and discard the gasket.

Installation Procedure

1. Install a new gasket to the transmission. Use sealer GM P/N 12346004 in order to hold the gasket in place.
2. Raise and position the transfer case to the vehicle Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
3. For vehicles equipped with a automatic transmission, install the six nuts securing the transfer case and bracket to the transmission adapter.

• • Tighten the nuts to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.) .

1. For vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, install the six nuts securing the transfer case and bracket to the transmission.

• • Tighten the nuts to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.) .

1. Install the vent hose to the transfer case.
2. Check the transfer case oil level.
3. Connect the speed sensor electrical connectors.
4. Install the electrical connectors to the transfer case motor/encoder.
5. Install any wiring harness to the transfer case.
6. Install the rear propeller shaft.
7. Install the front propeller shaft.
8. Install the transfer case shields.
9. Lower the vehicle.

4L60-E Automatic Transmission Replacement

Removal Procedure

• Tools Required
• J 21366 Converter Holding Strap

1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Drain the transmission fluid.
3. Remove the transmission oil level indicator tube and seal from the transmission.
4. Plug the oil level indicator tube opening in the transmission.
5. Remove the shift cable end from the transmission shift lever ball stud.
6. If equipped with a transfer case, remove the front propeller shaft.
7. Remove the rear propeller shaft.
8. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe if necessary.
9. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines from the transmission.
10. Plug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
11. Remove the starter motor.
12. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
13. Remove the torque converter access plug.
14. Remove the flywheel to torque converter bolts.

1. Remove the two bolts and nut securing the transmission rear mount to the transmission.

1. Remove the two bolts securing the heat shield to the transmission.

1. Remove the transmission vent hose, fuel lines, and the wiring harness from the transmission.

1. Remove the stud and the bolt securing the transmission to the engine.

1. Remove the six studs and one bolt securing the transmission to the engine.
2. Install the J 21366 onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
3. Pull the transmission straight back.
4. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
5. Flush the transmission oil cooler and cooling lines when you remove the transmission.

Installation Procedure

1. Install the J 21366 onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
2. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
3. Raise the transmission into place and remove the J 21366 from the transmission.
4. Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins while lining up the marks on the flywheel and the torque converter. The torque converter must be flush onto the flywheel and rotate freely by hand. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
5. Install six studs and one bolt securing the transmission to the engine.

• • Tighten the studs and the bolt to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.) .

1. Install the stud and bolt securing the transmission to the engine.

• • Tighten the stud and the bolt to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.) .

1. Install the flywheel to torque converter bolts.

1. Install the torque converter access plug.

1. Install the transmission vent hose, fuel lines, and the wiring harness to the transmission.

1. Install the two bolts securing the heat shield to the transmission.

• • Tighten the bolt to 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.) .

1. Install the two bolts and nut securing the transmission rear mount to the transmission.

• • Tighten the bolts and nut to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) .

1. Remove the transmission jack from the transmission.
2. Install the starter motor.
3. Unplug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
4. Connect the transmission oil cooler lines to the transmission.
5. Install the exhaust crossover pipe.
6. If equipped with a transfer case, install the front propeller shaft.
7. Install the rear propeller shaft.
8. Install the shift cable end to the transmission shift lever.
9. Unplug the oil level indicator tube opening in the transmission.
10. Install the transmission oil level indicator tube and seal to the transmission.
11. Fill the transmission to the proper fluid level.
12. Lower the vehicle.

it does not look like there is enough room for the t case to drop between the torsion bar member and the cross member. lol is it gonna fit through there
