tailgate only goes up hafway

i have a 2011 Tahoe. The tailgate only opens halfway and then goes down. I checked the top for obstruction and the sides but nothing. I just put on new tailgate shocks last fall.

if it lifts up all the way with the help of a finger then the struts or a strut is no longer working as designed.

The lift assist struts are shot. Replace them, and you'll be back in business. I used GM OEM replacement struts, but some folks here have had good luck with 3rd party strut manufacturers.

Thanks. I'm going oem this time. I ordered a pair from Amazon last fall and put them on. At least they lasted through the winter.

I believe GM OEM is Stabilis.

just an update. The left strut was shot. installed new ones. Works fine now. Thanks for the help.
