I am going to go on a limb, and say now, they probably most likely will be like your window controls, 5mm LED's sawdered on. Just a guess, I cant confirm that my self. But it would make sense.

IF they are infact the sawdered LEDs then yeah, Im going to go on another limb to... If you do replace them, I think you would have to take the steering wheel off, which would mean remove the airbag, etc... But I am not 100% sure, but I am favouring what I mentioned. Hopefully someone else here can confirm it for sure. Search the web, theres a sticky on the top of this catagory that says "so you need a chilton but cant afford it" or something like that, it may help you out.

they are little bulbs that you can replace if you wanted to. might be easier to just buy a new switch, as they aren't that expensive.

and no, you don't have to remove the steering wheel. you can pry out the switches and unhook the electrical connector.

Same thing happened to me and I replaced them with new bulbs...they are incandescents, not LED. Radio Shack part number is 272-1092 for new bulbs and they match almost perfectly. If one is out, I recommend replacing both...

Taking the switches out of the steering wheel can be tricky, as the wires are barely long enough, but with patience it can be done. I used a couple of jewelers screwdrivers with great success. The connector has a release tab to come out of the switch. The switches snap together with tabs, so using the screwdrivers I carefully pried them apart. Remove/replace the old bulbs by soldering and reinstall.

If you don't want to tackle the soldering, here are the part numbers for the switches...they're about $25 each at the dealer:

1999442 - Program/Source
21997738 - Trip/Fuel
21997739 - Driver Information display
1999443 - Seek/Volume

Good luck!

I was about to ask this question also.

I have an 04 Yukon. Are all the switches on the wheel supposed to light up? Only 1 out of the 4 switches on the lower spokes light up on mine.

Yup they are. I replaced one switch set about 6 months ago, and now the other 3 sets have all burned out.

I just did one switch tonight, couldn't figure out how to get the whole switch out so I just took apart the switch in place which popped the buttons off and then all I had to do was slide the board out!! If you do this while still on the steering wheel, don't lose the 3 red pins that will fall out of the buttons, you will need them for reinstallation!! Gotta go to Radioshack again and get more bulbs, thanks again for the bulb info Tailhook!!

Do you have to use a 3mm led? I couldn't imagine there is enough space for a 5mm.

Is there a chance the board would go bad? We soldered new bulbs - The one was brighter than the OEM but the other one in that same button group did not seem to light up.

I found the volume one on ebay for the 03. and replaced that whole switch but could not find the other.
