what do you use to fasten/stick it back on?

Seriously?

You don't.

You pulled the defrost etch off the window itself.
IF you have a big enough soldering gun/ torch, big balls, and lots of pull with the man upstairs, you can try re-soldering the entire pad slightly offset so it touches the remaining defrost inlay.

It only took me 2 hours of near constant work with a torch to finally get it to stay and work.

Whoa! Yeah it broke right off the window. I'll get a pic of it today and post later. I don't know if someone bumped it or if it fell off when shutting the hatch.

Is there some kind of adhesive that you can put on to make it stick, but still maintain the conductivity?

Go to the local Auto Glass Shop, they will re solder it for around $30.00.
