Needing to replace brake pads- Are the z36 overkill if you don't really tow?

My Yukon is more of a family hauler/ daily driver but i do have the 22 inch wheels. I usually am in the opinion of better to have and not need it, then need it and not have it. All the threads i have been reading seem to be stating to me that the daily driver powerstop kit z23 is more than enough.

he Z36 does offer about 25-30% more stopping power than stock, while the Z23 is good for about 15-20% better than stock.

So it really comes down to what you feel comfortable with..

carbon fiber+ceramic = noise and dust
you have to take the good with the bad I suppose
good luck, power stop brakes are good but a person "might" consider that brakes are a wear item so I buy the duralast premium ceramic, no dust, no noise and lifetime warranty.
one time purchase and I never have to pay for pads ever again as long as I have a vehicle that those pads fit.
I wear brakes out faster than most people so perhaps my opinion is skewed. I did not like the noise and dust of the carbon fiber, did it brake better? meh maybe a smidge if anything.
I do use there rotors on a couple vehicles, no complaints they hold up well, the ones I use are made from g3000 iron

i like the lifetime warranty-might just buy the rotors and research the brake pads. a ceramic only pad is the better option with the slotted and drilled rotor?

I have the powerstop z23 rotors and pads, and I tow a lot. They’re excellent and in my opinion the z36 aren’t worth the added cost.

Had a panic stop a couple of years ago on I-95 when a car careened from the far right lane to the left lane where I was after he was rear-ended by a truck. To this day I don’t know how I missed hitting that guy but I credit the z23 brakes with helping my wife, daughter, and me avoid disaster.

that's one design they use because some drilled rotors are prone to developing cracks, not that it's necessarily any "better design"

What was wrong with the brakes that came on the truck?

have 97K and still on original brakes. had the truck serviced and report showed it was down to the last 4 mm on the brakes. just want to replace to be on the safe side and if i can put something better on it since i intend to keep it.

I just put new brakes on my 2016 Tahoe. The original rear brakes lasted 185K miles. The front brakes lasted 130K miles. Considering I do A LOT of stop and go driving in NYC [bqe-cross bronx expressway gowanus expressway plus other roads for months at a time I would say the AC Delco rotors and pads held up extremely well so I just stayed with them. In South Florida I-95 is a parking lot half of the time.

If fade is an issue, bigger brakes or different pads can make a difference. But if you are just driving normally, tires and the ABS system is what is really going to control stopping distance.

I originally switched after warping two sets of front rotors and having brake fade through mountain driving and the drilled and slotted rotors have not warped or faded due to heat. The rotors do wear faster than stock blank discs. Softer and faster wear generally equates to better stopping at the expense of durability and dust. You have to decide what is important personally.

the metal used in the rotors is the same as oem, it's not softer, thinner or anything else. pads are a different story....
the powerstop rotors I have on my truck are 5 years old and still as good as day 1, they have never needed to be turned (and yes contrary to popular belief drilled/slotted rotors can be turned) I drive the literal piss out of it too.

I only drive the Turnpike.... unless I drive north from West Palm.
