How to utilize AV components for rear entertainment system

Recently purchased a 2011 Yukon with rear entertainment system. Everything works and the kids love the screens....but it needs DVD's.

I use Roku's and even have a collection of movies on portable HDD's and am wondering if anyone has had any success updating their system to use with more current media. I'm guessing I could convert the component to hdmi and plug in a portable media player with USB drive?

Has anyone had success with any certain setups?

On trips, we've used an RCA HDMI to Composite adapter and a 300w inverter to power an Xbox1 and the kids played games and watched movies that I converted to mp4 from a USB drive plugged into the Xbox1

i'm not following your conversion on this? the rear a/v input is composite so all you would need to do is convert your media source to composite. I yanked all that archaic stuff out first thing and put in wireless android auto I can run media from just about anything dvd, sd card, hard drive, hdmi, composite. I have a hot spot in there also so a roku, appletv or chromecast could used as well

Roku ultra (point anywhere remote and usb input for local media)
300 w power inverter to power both units.
1 tb portable ssd

I already have hot spot.

So for about $220 I’m hoping to have a pretty nice little system that will take minutes to setup

I'm sorry to hijack the thread with this question, but I did the same thing with a Hizpo unit in my '07 last year. So far, I can only get it to play DVDs on the rear screen from the head unit. The front screen built into the head unit will play anything including the DVDs, thumb drive media, etc. Has that been your experience also?

I have never heard of Hizpo, but with my pioneer I have to be sure it is set to "mirror" if I want whatever is playing up front to play on the rear at the same time

Gotcha. Hizpo is one of about 10 or so Chinese manufacturers of Android-based direct-fit head unit for these trucks. It works fabulously but these units have their quirks, like this one I’m looking for a solution for.

All of the android units I have seen do not support rear entertainment

what are you using for hot spot?

also do you mind sharing links on the products you mentioned. I just want to do some research as well.

I use a Alcatel linkzone with t-mobile, it gets anywhere from 12~24mb depending where you are i've been running that thing for 3 years straight I think I had to reboot it once I would call that pretty dependable, I keep it in the center console runs off usb power

I use a Verizon 4g hotspot, also powered by usb. All items I purchased from amazon. Went with roku ultra for local media usb input and point anywhere remote(everything is stuffed in center console) also make sure you get hdmi to av converter and not an av to hdmi. I went with a 300w inverter.

Subscribing. I've wanted to do the same thing and setup a hotspot & chromecast but haven't wanted to tear into stuff without knowing what sorts of ports I was going to find and where. Definitely want to keep the the factory screens installed.

You might be able to mirror whats on your smart phone via composite to hdmi to your phone. It would take a couple of cables but it might work.
