So I have this '02 2500HD, it was lifted when I bought it, I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to lifts; don't know how to tell if it's a 6" or maybe even an 8" Rancho lift, don't know if it's a knuckle lift or some other type of lift. I've been reading and learning a about lifts lately but the more I read the more I realize I don't know... and I want to make sure I ask the right questions. So here goes:
About a year ago I noticed that the boots on front axle shafts were cracked and leaking grease so I started looking into replacing the boots. I found out that I could get new axle shaft assemblies for about the same price that I could get the boots replaced so I did that. I found some that were aftermarket remans and supposedly they studied the core parts for weaknesses and actually improved on their design. Don't know if that's the case or not but thought it was worth a shot for the price.
After the new assemblies were in I could hear a noise that sounded an awful lot like tire rub while going around curves at about 50-60mph. I took it back to the mechanic and left it with him for a week or so but he never was able to find the noise. Said that maybe something just needed to wear in and maybe it would stop over time. Which it did for the most part until last week when I hit a dip in the road (not even a pothole) and the passenger side axle shaft busted off!
I dropped it off with a different mechanic, he said that it sheared off the part right by the spacers that are put on with the lift... I don't even know which part he's talking about. I have another axle shaft assembly, the mechanic picked up another piece of the axle for me and I am supposed to be looking for another spacer to put this truck back together but I don't want to do this more than once. The mechanic says that the part that broke is solid steel and he's never seen one broken before, I wonder why the heck it busted???
I realize this may be a little vague, I'm going to get a couple of pics from the mechanic and I'll post them up here, if you need more info just let me know and I'll try to get it ASAP. Any ideas guys???
