Hey everyone,
I'm posting on behalf of my friend who owns a 2022 Yukon XL. She’s been having a serious issue where the vehicle will randomly brake on its own while driving on the interstate. It’s not just a slight slowdown—it's hard braking, and just today it happened again and actually caused smoke to come from the tires.

She took it to the dealership, but they couldn’t find any trouble codes and weren’t able to reproduce the problem. After getting it back, the issue stopped for about a week, but now it’s happening again.

Has anyone experienced something similar or have any idea what might be causing this? Also, if there’s a thread on here or somewhere else online that covers this issue, I’d really appreciate being pointed in the right direction. I haven’t been able to find anything so far.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum from Oregon.

I hope some shop can duplicate the problem and get the safety problem fixed.

First I have heard of it but not surprised given the year, might try turning off the nannies as in collision avoidance, etc and see if that stops the problem, if so then you know it's related to one of those which is most likely the case

Could this be a symptom of the Real Wheel Lockup? Does she have the Duramax?

I had this happen on my 2024 Yukon Denali XL one time. I was using the Adaptive Cruise and on a road doing about 75 MPH without a car in sight. All the sudden the brakes are on hard and I am slowing down FAST. I was a bit freaked out, the road was straight, flat and dry and it was sunny out. I was more trying to process what the hell caused the issue to occur.

I just turned the Adaptive Cruise off and then turned it back on. I had about another 3 hours on my trip using the Adaptive Cruise much of the trip after this occurred and it never happened again on the rest of the trip or since, but I only have about 8700 miles on the truck at the moment.

My guess is I was driving into the sun and possibly the sun caused something to happen on one of the cameras?? I have not fully researched how exactly the Adaptive Cruise operates and what inputs/sensors/cameras may be used. The only other thing that may have triggered the brakes was the road was slightly down hill and then flattened out right about the time the brakes came on. Maybe the roadway in front of the truck flattening out was detected as some sort of obstruction?

I would have the battery checked and replaced if it is below 70% capacity and would recommend that the vehicle not be used with Adaptive Cruise for a while and see what happens.

I do have the Collision Alert vibrate my seat and flat the HUD red more often that I would expect it to, but usually there is a car exiting or turning right and I am still at speed but the vehicle I am following is almost out of my path or just out of my path. This does not cause braking, just the seat to vibrate and the HUD to flash red.

Have they fixed problem my 2022 Yukon xl is doing the same thing

Just to update, in the 14 months I have had my 2024 it has 2 times randomly started braking hard and flashing the red warning in the HUD about a possible collision when using the Radar Cruise and both times were straight roads with no vehicles anywhere near me.

Luckily in both cases there was no traffic close behind me either. It somewhat catches me off guard, but I tend to leave it for a while trying to figure out why it may be braking hard, looking around the road and the dash, but in each instance no tell tale reason this is happening so I assume since both situations were during the daytime, maybe somehow the sun may have caused some sort of problem with one or more of the cameras or sensors that would detect a vehicle at close range.

My fix is to just turn the Cruise control off, the braking stopsthe moment I turn the cruise control off, then I just turn the Cruise control back on either immediately or after making sure the road conditions are good. I turn the Cruise back on and have no other instances of random braking for a long period of time.

I have had numerous instances of the Collision Avoidance system flashing the HUD and may or may not have had the brakes engage, this usually happens when passing a vehicle making a right turn in front of me or taking an exit ramp. Somehow when the vehicle in front of me slows and I am not slowing the system thinks there is a potential collision ready to happen, but my algorithm and the vehicles safety system algorithm seem to be a bit different.

Will try to update if I have any other random braking situations.
