terrible sound coming from the rear of my Tahoe the other day. Sounded like i hit something, persisted any time i added power in reverse or forward. Hobbled it down to my trusted mechanic and he said the spider gears are in chunks inside the rear diff. To replace, he quoted me $2500.00 He said because it has posi-traction, it can't be rebuilt but needs to be replaced.

Any experience with this situation? Costs involved as described above in-line or out of line?

The Transmission, Rear and Front Differentials and Transfer case all had a fluid replacement at this shop in March 2020. Less than 5k miles ago at 121k. Now 126k.

Thank you in advance,

you are getting taken for a ride, you can get that all replaced with better than oem parts for 1500-1600 at the most, that includes the pinion and carrier, find another shop.
