[SOLVED] Front (4wd) Axle Spewing Grease - Also Scraping Sound

Any thoughts on new Delco Gold or Bosch starters? The oem GMs are remanufactured and twice the cost plus a hefty core charge. At the rate we're going I'm not sure if we'll outlive the truck or the other way around; either way economizing is part of life now.

    Rock Auto

Shoot, you should see my vehicle registrations. Thirty-six bucks in fees added to a fifty-five dollar motorbike registration. Fifteen bucks fee to park in state parks (that used to be free to us seniors), another fifteen to support clean air and six bucks for Motorcycle Education that had never...

Codes can always be found on a variety of vehicle forums. I have never seen any more than 5% though so that just covers part of sales tax or part of shipping; not a lot of money and not a deal breaker comparing prices.

[SOLVED] Front (4wd) Axle Spewing Grease - Also Scraping Sound

Agreed on "not a cv noise" after a bit more driveway testing. I posted recent tests. So, what goes wrong with the flex plate? The truck starts without obvious trouble and the tranny functions well as it always has. It seems like the starter might be a least effort thing to tackle. Are rebuilds...

[SOLVED] Front (4wd) Axle Spewing Grease - Also Scraping Sound

Good tips, thanks. Following the leads of a few of the recent suggestions: Cold start this morning, power brake in both forward and reverse on level driveway caused the noise. Based on that the noise appears to not be related to moving. Drove around a bit and the most noticeable thing was...

    Rock Auto

I have received many oem parts via Rock Auto and I am convinced they came from local dealers. Once I did receive a return though because there were greasy finger prints on the part. They promptly took it back and gave a full refund. Other than that I have always been happy, especially with...

[SOLVED] Front (4wd) Axle Spewing Grease - Also Scraping Sound

Thanks for that. The sound is only in gear and not rolling in neutral. More snooping around in order when the weather gets off of the roller coaster.

Fless, back on the axles, what are your thoughts on replacing the failed boots?

[SOLVED] Front (4wd) Axle Spewing Grease - Also Scraping Sound

That was my thought having that happened repeatedly on the Forester but I jacked the Tahoe up twice and spun the wheel and there wasn't even a faint scratching. On the ground, it's primarily going forward, not reverse. I'll be embarrassed if it's the opposite wheel though! Tomorrow is another day.

[SOLVED] Front (4wd) Axle Spewing Grease - Also Scraping Sound

The picture is bad because it doesn't show the accumulated grease on upper and lower suspension members (left axle); piles of grease like it's been thrown in gobs. On closer inspection the boots on the axles on both sides of the truck have the boots torn to some degree where they are clipped to...

[SOLVED] Front (4wd) Axle Spewing Grease - Also Scraping Sound

Only have poor pictures. Yes, the CV shaft at the outer end. Grease is on parts above and below but that doesn't show in the pictures. Would make a scraping sound even if not in 4wd?

[SOLVED] Front (4wd) Axle Spewing Grease - Also Scraping Sound

I just started hearing a light metallic metal on metal grinding noise near the drivers front wheel on our '08 4wd Tahoe. It is a sound reminiscent of a pebble caught between the the brake rotor and backing plate on other vehicles. The noise is most noticeable when applying the throttle, both...

    Side Body Moulding Anchorage?

The rear door exterior side body moulding on our '08 Tahoe is curling outward at the forward end and causing interference with the rear edge of the front door. It is a replacement moulding installed by a body shop three or four years ago after body repairs where done but it's too long ago to...

    Oil Filter efficiency

A side story on oil and filters. The only Ford I ever owned was given to me by a girl friend's father. He was a very frugal traveling salesman. It turns out that he never changed the oil or the filter in the life of the car. She got a 67 Camaro and I got the hand me down. It was quiet running...

    Michelin Defender LTX Tires

I have had two sets but was talked into a less expensive Cooper set between them; No comparison. Send the money on the Michelin's; they are quiet, comfortable and handle all sorts of weather including snow (we are in the Northeast, recently had 19" snow storm and no issue).

2008 Tahoe power steering fluid change

I have a hose that oozes a little; Just looks like a bit of dampness on a small area. Perhaps I'll swap out the fluid with the system in tact for now and double back next season. Fluid is not expensive enough bought in larger containers to avoid duplicate effort.

2008 Tahoe power steering fluid change

Is it necessary to raise the wheels or can it be achieved on the ground? About how many cycles does it take to get to the fluid where you liked it? Can you estimate the system fluid capacity in the event it needs draining to swap out a hose?

[SOLVED] Underhood Intermittent Screech In Freezing weather

Thanks for all the input guys. Simplest solution is the one. I can't believe how sounds travels because I was sure it was from the alternator/PS pump area but then maybe the throttle body. It turned out to be the AC system. It has not worked in quite a while but the tensioner was changed with...

[SOLVED] Underhood Intermittent Screech In Freezing weather

Thanks. Following through. Will the WD-40 damage the belts? UNfortunately (?) today it is in the upper 30's out there and try as I may I can get the screeching noise. I pulled the upper main belt and none of the pulleys/tensioners make bothersome noises or4 have noticeable play. There is a...

[SOLVED] Underhood Intermittent Screech In Freezing weather

Thanks, more points to check out. I hadn't guessed belt slippage. If it is near or below 20 degrees it does not go away with any amount of local driving but it is a bit imtermittant, meaning it's here, then not, then back again depending the the rpm. At much above 1500 or it's quieted down...
