anybody with half a brain knows everything is made using oil in one fashion or another. Oil is never going to go away even if it has to be squeezed out of plants
but you are led to believe otherwise.
could you make a rock tool without using oil?, yes but that won't feed your family.

The fact of the matter is that while the USA is currently the world's leading oil producer and the world's leading oil refiner, synthetic lubricant production for the world is centered in the Middle East. Why? I'm sure that it comes down to them historically being the least cost producer.

But, that refining capacity could be moved to other parts of the world, if necessary. It is not rocket science.

I always thought that, depending on cost and such, it was smarter, in the long run, for us to buy oil and save ours; deplete theirs.

here at least, it takes many years to build a refinery, the one being built in Brownsville (for light crude) has been in the works for a decade already and groundbreaking "might" happen sometime next year.

So if synthetic oil is made using natural gas, who has the biggest supply of natural gas in the world?
Pennsylvania?
There’s so much natural gas in Pa that they are running 3 shifts around the clock collecting, pumping and compressing it to LNG to export all over the world.
Definitely North America has the highest concentration of natural gas.

It’s hard to believe a refinery in Qatar is the source of all synthetic oil.

Having the resource and having the facilities to process the resource and at a reasonable price all factor into the corporate decisions about what products are produced and if they are profitable.

Then factor in transportation cost and market demand

Well... in USA.. there are many customers for nat gas... it is also hard to transport. The big fields in UAE.. have no customers for burning it. also.. no EPA like it is here. so.. they use up natural gas in UAE.. delivery a great product which has no deliverability issues. i expect the restoration is going to take a long time to get it going again, too.

Roughly 30 years ago, I had a jog hauling natural gas from Tulsa to central KS, where it was pumped into old salt mines, for storage.

Group IV synthetic oils can be made from natural gas, among several other things; it's what comes to mind when you think of synthetic.
Group III synthetic oils are made by chemically and mechanically refining and filtering and distilling non-synthetic oil ingredients
until what's left is good enough to be called synthetic oil, plus some other leftover krapb on the side

The main thing I've learned from this thread is that "synthetic" is mostly a lie.
