I am purchasing a 2026 Tahoe LS 4WD with 5.3L engine. It comes with a 3yr/36K miles bumper to bumper warranty and 5yr/60K miles powertrain warranty. I'm looking into a 7yr/100K miles extended warranty (Premier Plus) costing $3500? The extended warranty covers most everything except consumable parts such as battery, bulbs, airbags (interestingly), rotors, springs, muffler, etc. I'm particularly concerned about lifters in the 5.3L engine. Opinions?

Are you sure you are considering an extended warranty and not a service plan?

Is the Premier Plus an aftermarket service plan? If so, I would recommend against it and only recommend the GMPP (General Motor Protection Plan). It is good nationwide and you don’t have to fight with a third-party to cover repairs. Some third party plans have a limit on labor prices. The GM plan covers all parts and labor at the going rate (for any covered repair).

Thank you for the sanity check, it is with SecureNet and indeed appears to be a service plan.

i did a 72/72 with $250 deduct on my '24 yukon i purchase last january. it was not a lot out of pocket... i agree that with GM's failures it is good deal. On the other hand... i have a can on the intake to eliminate some oil on the intake valves, 5-30 oil and a eliminator of the afm during running and no shutdown either.

i have had 4 of these 5.3's and they are usually ok if do the oil change every 4k or so and don't rev them up much past 3k.

Although helpful to the motor all of those things you listed can void the warranty. Especially using the non GM specified oil, gives them a reason to deny the claim.

I run a catch can but remove it for any service. Also I only use dexos oil with the manufacturer specification on the receipts. N

I vote to not buy any Service Plan or Extended Warranty Plan, but if you must, why buy it before you use the warranty that comes with it? You may get rid of it before the 3 year/36k miles warranty and then you wasted the money.

GMPP needs to be bought before 12k to get the “new” car price. I’m waiting until that.

Soooo, then you only waste 2 years and 24k miles of money instead of the 3 years and 36k miles....Really? There is a reason they do that and it is crystal clear. The so called "insurance" is a come on. Was in the shops 40+ years and dealt with these crooked turds. The fact that they want it bought either in the very beginning or before a year goes by, shows you that the money they collect for that will offset the warranty claims for all vehicles in the 3 year and 36k miles window.

True, but the warranty as I understand it is transferable. This may increase your trade in at a dealer but it's also an asset selling private party. If I pull the trigger on a new Yukon this year, I plan to drive it to at least 100k miles, and will purchase the GMMP plan to cover it until around that milage. With all the electronics these vehicles have and when one module can brick a vehicle, it's a no brainer for me.

I bought a GMPP for my 2024 Tahoe Premier and my wife’s 2025 Equinox RX AWD (both purchased new). I have bought manufacturer’s service plans for many new vehicles I have purchased and all have paid off.

The GMPP can be refunded if you sell the vehicle (or it is demolished) and the plan was not used (or transferred to the new owner for a $50 fee).

On other feature of the GMPP, it will pay to tow your disabled vehicle to the closet GM dealer - which is worth its weight in gold if you travel.

What are you talking about?
Did you look into the contract details?

Whatever plan you buy starts the day you BUY the plan. So if you have 12k miles at 2 years old and buy a 7 yr plan it’s 7 yrs from plan purchase, or 9 years from vehicle delivery. Same with the miles. If you buy with 12k miles a 100k warranty covers you to 112k miles.

I called Knapp and talked to them on the phone to verify already.

And yes you can also buy the warranty as long as you have the bumper to bumper. BUt there will be a surcharge if purchased over 12k miles.

If money was no object you could buy a 96 month warranty at 3 years and have 142 months coverage from delivery.

You are overlapping no matter which way you say it. If I was to buy one of the plans, never would, I would wait till the 3 year, 36k miles is up and then do it. If you think you are coming out ahead, then the GM people will laugh alll the way to the bank.

I look at it this way. If your mind is made up ahead of time, to buy the PP or Ext Warranty, then why ask for opinions?

I am only giving my opinion. You do you.

I can do a lot of work myself but these new trucks are way different that anything pre-2015. There are so many computers and modules that failures are expensive and hard to diagnose.

It was about $3500 for a GMPP
96 month warranty extension on my 2026 Tahoe and I will be going that route. I also have the 6.2L
Which is known for failures so that was a big driver for me.

To each his own.

It's honestly about to the point on anything put out these days, that folks like us who could trouble shoot about anything with a good diagnostic tool are only going to be able to do basic things like service work. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy things like oil changes, brake jobs and such, but I also enjoy the trouble shooting aspect, and those capabilities become less and less the more complicated vehicles become.
Getting an extended warranty from GMPP will be a no brainer for me.

I’ve found even with my fancy diagnostics tools it will point you to a module and that is the end of the troubleshooting. “Replace module” which could cost $1000 bucks time you buy it and have the dealer program it! All these modules require programming now and the dealers charge around $200 even if it takes them 5 min, I know becuase I replaced a suspension control module in a 2015.

Also one headlight assembly on my 2026 Tahoe costs $1400, it’s the parts costs that are also extremely high.

All the more reason to buy a nice GMT800 and skip all the touchscreen pushbutton nightmares that are made now. GMT800 was the last great series.
