    clunk on downshift into second gear

    Mine does this all the time, especially when cold and accelerating lightly. It drives me insane! It is so bad that when I have passengers in my truck, they ask if something is wrong when it happens. I also think it is ridiculous that GM thinks a clunk that loud is "normal" and cannot be fixed.

    What year is your Tahoe? If you have the DIC system, it is one of the items you can scroll through. If not, you have to hold down the trip button (possibly with truck off).

    I think you actually have an AWD version....pretty much the same as the Denali and Escalade. The auto 4WD has a 2High, 4High, 4Low and auto buttons. They are not very common on Tahoes and Yukons, but I have seen a few. I believe they are full time AWD transfer cases, not part time.

    If your service engine light came on, it is likely more serious than a filter or oil change. Either use a scanner or stop by autozone/napa/etc and have them read the code(s). Post them back on here and someone will try to help you diagnose.

    I believe that is an AWD version...the buttons are for turning off stabilitrak and 4 wheel low. If I remember correctly, these are full time AWD systems and not part time like many of the newer cars/suvs on the road.

    Thanks for the heads up. I was probably going to try the washer first. I believe you can do the bolts one at a time and add a washer without removing the crossbar.

    From my quick and dirty research, it does appear that the front crossmember can cause this exact issue. There also seem to be two fixes...one being to enlarge the slots in the crossmember and the other being to add a 14mm ID washer. I'm not really sure which to do, but the easier of the two...
