Cold start issue
You will need a scan tool to read fuel pressures. There is an in-tank pump for low pressure and a high pressure fuel pump located under the intake manifold. You cannot read fuel pressure from that pump with a scan tool that can read the data. Are you setting any DTC's for low fuel pressure?- ccbaugh

AFM disable or lifter issue 2012 PPV TAHOE
A lifter losing prime will cause this issue. Sometimes they will pump up and then stop. When that happens, the engine cannot complete combustion and that's where you get your smell from the exhaust.
