It's about time someone called out GM on this issue!!!!!
GM perfected "planned obsolescence" a long time ago. It's not a Ford. It's designed to last about 10 years or 100,000 miles. Or as long as the warranty permits. You got to live somewhere dry, with no salt, or be a damned good mechanic and body man to keep it on the road past it's expiration...- badtothe bone

You forget that the Vega used Teflon in the cylinders and when it over heated the Teflon fell off the cylinder wall. If they took the pistons out, bored the cylinder, put bigger Pistons in it would run just fine. Drag racers used that engine for years, just fill the water jacket with hard...- badtothe bone

What should i do about oil leak
The forum members are saying that you have to remove the oil pan to replace the rear main seal in a 5.3L V-8 engine. You take the transmission out, take the adaptor off the back of the engine, pry out the old seal, pound in the new seal, put it back together, its not a hard job.- badtothe bone

Cutting rotors for new brakes
The best rotors I ever bought were the ones sold on EBAY - they come in a GREEN BOX and were anodized - except that they did not coat them between the fins. Slotted and Cross Drilled and I don't think they were more then $150 for the pair. the Hart rotors looks nice, but are a little too pricy...- badtothe bone

I once bought Performance Friction Carbon Metallic for a 2009 Avalanche and believe it or not the GM pads lasted longer.. I bought a set of rotors off the internet - came with matching pads - and those $15 generic pads out stopped and outlasted any GM pad I ever owned. One set I bought for my 06...- badtothe bone

Rusted Brake Bleeder Valves?
Brake Calipers are just a mechanical part. Its been my experience that it is best to pulse them with a tech II when you do any brake work. Other then that, if it works, why replace it? TRansmission shop here charges about $550 - $600 to change a transmission. Once the transmission is out - its simple to change the rear main seal, it unbolts and no you don't have to take off the oil pan to change it. Lots of bad advice here on this forum. I don't know where you are from, but in Western Pennsylvania, we don't cut rotors, we throw them away! A new rotor tends to last about 2 years, then the road salt eats the rotors and once a rust ridge builds up around the outside edge - they are junk.
