I still need to lift the front and remove wheels to check suspension. I did grab the tire and pulled back and forth, shaking the entire vehicle and didn't hear or feel anything in the wheel bearings or suspension. Did that while fueling up before driving it home.

Before you pull wheels, use a floor jack and jack up under the lower control arm right at the lower ball joint. Lift about 2" off the ground. Then put a long enough pry bar under the tire at 6 o'clock. Pry up and down while holding top of tire and pulling out. See if there is play at the ball joints. You have to use a long pry bar and need another person to look that knows what to look for or you look while they pry. Leave the other tire on the ground. When done, put both tires on the ground and have someone start engine and rock the steering wheel from 3 to 9 and watch for steering linkage slop and play at the steering shaft. Look at the upper and lower control arm bushings when you are rocking the steering wheel.

Had an 03' with the 'clunk'. No one could find anything wrong with the arms, joints, etc.....
Turned out to be the steering box itself. Found someone that knew about the issue. It was like 250 bucks to go thru it.

Can be internal in the box or where it mounts at the frame.

In your neck of the woods, are they mostly rusted out from road salt? Or is there some good ones available?

Had an 05 Suburban and it also had the clunk. Never did figure it out, but it was definitely somewhere in the steering. The wife tangled with a big rig a few months ago and the insurance company totalled the Burb. So my clunk will have to remain a mystery.
