I decided to take a look. Found a dealer called Friendly Chevrolet in Dallas. The biggest discounts were on the High Country's, $5k and $5.3k respectively. Amazing to me, this dealer has 23 Tahoes in stock. In the Phila area, most dealers have 0-2. When I pull up those 2 cars with the largest discounts, they have a low VIN# which implies they've been sitting unsold for months. This would be the question--hey Friendly, instead of those 2 HC's, I'd like to order one, and I'd like $5,300 off. At least where I live, I was told, $4,400 is a steep discount on a custom order, we couldn't do that. Maybe Friendly says, hey, I like you, let's do $8k off your customer order. One can't know until they try. But for $5,300 off, I wouldn't be able to make the trip and get the vehicle back. I'm at $3,900 on a custom order, $500 refundable deposit, with ZERO dealer add ons. Good, bad, indifferent, it's where I'm at and waiting...if it's easy to double $5300, to $10,600 off? Maybe then ordering is being stubborn. But my $3,900 off was order or in stock, doesn't matter. From what I can tell, most dealers would prefer to discount in stock. My dealer had 1 and only 1 in stock. Another question I'd have for Friendly, is the price shown the out the door price, less maybe $477 doc fee, and sales tax.
Edit: I found one in stock at Friendly that is exactly our build. It has a $4500 discount. They have also added wheel locks, and on the website, it's ready to add 1 of 2 protection packages, without a price. Again, only someone who has purchased from them knows, but they seem ready for dealer add ons, built right into the website. The $4500, if no dealer add ons, can't cover my cost to go there and get the car. But if easily doubled? Maybe.
Edit 2: Being curious by nature, I found a thread from someone in Texas on reddit, expressing frustration that every dealer has add ons totaling $4k+, and nobody seemed to want to give him an out the door price without sitting down and going in. their words were it's as if dealers are about to commit crimes and they don't want to leave any evidence behind. Then, multiple people said to get around the add ons, order a vehicle rather than take one off the lot. It does seem to me that ordering takes the gamesmanship out of the picture. Not knowing the ins and outs it seems that there is a high likelihood that a custom order is a sold vehicle, when it arrives (customers don't generally wait 2 mos with their refundable deposit and back out, I should think). Yes, a sale is not made until the money is in the bank. But the majority of car sales imho is tire kicking. jmoymmv
