H-pipe is also known as a balance tube- unless running a flowmaster type H-pipe where it is side-by-side really tight, the h-pipe has little benefit other than equalizing exhaust tone.
X-pipe is all about scavenging the cylinders. It needs to be as close to the engine as possible for maximum effect. Equal length pipes in front is needed for maximum effect. Headers make a huge difference. It will equal exhaust tone, add velocity in exhaust, and give you a better mid-high range, but won't hurt bottom end.
