I think I might have blown something in my transfer case today.

I left work and 2 miles away, pulled out onto a road that had a slight up-hill climb and as soon as I gave it a little gas I heard a loud bang, then a high pitch whining.

I pulled over and noticed the LED indicator on the transfer case control was off. I tried pushing the 2hi button and nothing happened. I was eventually able to put it into 4high, then when 2high was pressed, the light didn't come on. It started working when I turned the truck around to go back up to work.

The high pitch whine seems to get better when the speed increases, shifting to a different gear in the transmission doesn't seem to change the noise at low speed.

I thought I'd ask you guys how you would attack a problem like this, as this is my first 4x4 and I've never had a major problem with it before.

do you still have a reverse gear?

I don't think I tried reverse, but otherwise it drives fine...just a whining noise coming from around the transfer case/tranny area. I didn't try to engage 4x4 and drive it after it happened either.

I don't think it's throwing a code, but I'll hook up my reader tomorrow to be sure.

Tomorrow I will check reverse and put it up on jackstands with it in gear and get a video of what's going on.

@SunlitComet - You were definitely onto something. I have no reverse gear now. :(

unknown at this time.
I believe you have broken your sun shell. I am afraid you need to tear it down to get to it. The more you use it the more damage you will cause. A newer stronger one called the beast is available. Depending on other tranny conditions you may just rebuild it. You will see the bearing, bushings and clutch's condition once torn down. Sorry man.

Thanks for your help man. Sounds like a fun time. :emotions122:

At least I get to try out rebuilding an auto tranny for the first time.

I rebuit mine and it realy is not that hard. If it was me I would go ahead and rebuid it. Put in better cluches wile you have it down. You will need one spechal tool and the rest will be normal hand tools. There is a DVD that you can get that will walk you throu it as well. Here is a few sites i looked at before I did mine.

Thanks xanatost. I'll be crawling under mine as soon as the rain stops here...it's been non-stop for a solid week. After reading all this material and watching some videos, it actually doesn't look as hard as I had imagined in my head.
