Need advice about replacing 2012 Denali Transmission. AAA towed me in to local repair shop last night. Engine runs but will not do anything in D or R. P does work and hold the vehicle. Wen unloading off the tow truck, the driver then said D and R did work.
Quoted last night about $4,500 for a rebuilt one and about $800 to install. They will actually look at it today and report back on what they think the problem really is, but a replacement would be the worst case. The rebuilt one I think is coming from a GM dealer, which they then buy and resell to me and install. I will have full details later today after they look at it. The rebuilt one also may be coming from another source.
Do these prices sound reasonable to you in today's market? Are there other rebuild choices? Bought the vehicle used 5 yeas ago with 98,000 miles and have had no issues, except for usual maintenance costs. Have a 2003 SLT 5.7 L in my drive way I bought new with 325,000 miles on it with original transmission. But it is rusted out and not running. Used now like a storage unit.
My Local repair shop guys all currently drive GM Yukons or Surburbans, so they have experience. But they won't be rebuilding anything. Also don't know if the old transmission then has any value, or if the price they pay for a rebuilt one includes turning in of the old one. Thanks for your comments.

A GM replacement is a decent option, and will likely get you another 150K miles with good maintenance. And you get a reasonable warranty. $800 for the removal/install is a good price, as is the $4500 for the trans.

Your only other good option is to take it to a trans specialist that will be able to rebuild the unit that you have. With an upgraded billet torque converter and aftermarket improvement parts, it will last longer and perform slightly better (especially with a tune). Very few of those shops will warranty a trans that they don't install, so you would have to tow your vehicle to one if you can find them. It is probably at least $6K for a quality rebuild plus install.

Make sure to have the trans cooler lines replaced while they are in there.

Sometimes the dealers have coupons off service too. With this coupon $3742 for gm and ends up being like $2900 give or take tax. Have them do the rear main seal too.

You could get a new and upgraded one from rpm or preformabuilt transmissions for around 3500$ shipped give or take I’d opt for that over another stock unit so maybe it’ll last longer.my buddy's beat the shit out of his from rpm with no issues

Neutral in D and R can be a number of things including shredded front planet, malfunctioning TEHCM (no line pressure), failing pump rotor/slide, #1 and #5 check ball both sticking in the spacer plate which is inside the valve body assembly. Could be any or some combination of the above or stripping splines as well as torque converter.

Will have to see what they say but the pricing you're being quoted is about normal for a replacement with removal and reinstallation.

Get more quotes, you get the tran price form several GM dealers and what kind of deal they will give you. Get at least 5 quotes.
