Ok here's my problem. My trans went out a few months ago. And I just got a replacement. But right after it went out I was coasting it off the road and a big ass cloud of black smoke came out of the tail pipe. Should I be worried about starting my tahoe up after that happening. Can anyone out there give me some hope that it was just something that happens when the trans goes out. Thanks

Typically, black smoke is related to incomplete fuel burn (carbon exiting the tailpipe). Given that you associated the black smoke with the transmission "going out", it's possible that it was just a fuel dump due to a sudden/surprise "no load" condition on the engine, "free-spin" if you will. You should be able to start it without worry, assuming everything was good with the engine before the transmission stopped functioning.

The only physical connection between the engine and the transmission is the flex-plate/flywheel-torque converter. There's nothing from the transmission that would appear in the exhaust.

As far as what happens when a transmission "goes out", that's pretty broad and "going out" can mean different things.
I've had my transmission lose function due to broken bands/clutches, planetary gears losing teeth, and even the torque converter breaking. In none of those cases have I witnessed what you described as related to the exhaust.

I know my transmission has nothing to do with my exhaust. It came out wrong when I posted. But I was just worried that something had happened to my engine after my transmission went out. Because when the transmission went out it broke one of the slots on the torque converter it also mangled the transmission pump an burned up all the clutch plates.

Gotcha...your engine should be fine, especially since the connection between engine and transmission is not mechanical (the torque converter uses fluid to transfer the torque from engine to trans rather than connection rod).

If it is blowing black smoke, obviously, it means you are running rich on fuel. Possibly your fuel pressure regulator i leaking and allowing excess fuel to be dumped into your cylinders. ?? Just a thought.
