217k mile Transmission is flaring 1-2 and slipping from 2-3. Although shifts fine when cold.

Ive got a bunch of youtube videos and downloaded the service manual in preparation to replacing my trans with a rebuilt unit from RockAuto. I have never done this before on a GM. I worked at a Mercedes shop while in college and helped replace a few transmissions and rear main seals, so i get the gist of it. The rebuild is by The Transmission Authority, located back in my home state of MI. It's hard to beat $1400 shipped ( core return shipping included), getting a $350 core back, and has a 3 year warranty. This will be done on my driveway with 6 ton jack stands, hopefully before the snow comes.

So far I have ordered/bought:
-Rebuilt Transmission
-Harbor Freight Transmission jack

I'm thinking I might need to replace the rear main seal while the trans is out. I see DORMAN 635518 has a new plate and bolts and gaskets for $32. It seams easier, and commenters on youtube recommend it, just buy the new plate with seal installed. Right? Any advice with removing transfercase or anything else?

I'd never done anything like taking a 4L60 down and putting an NV4500 in its place on my 97 2 door. I did it and it was relatively easy. I would think replacing it with a new version of the same tranny would be easy. DO buy the tranny jack. DO NOT use a regular jack and "balance" the transmission on there right up until the point where it falls onto the floor. Ask me how I know...good luck

Good luck! Hopefully you'll have a few buddies come and help out.

Thanks, None of my car-buddies live around me anymore. Might as well have my wife help.

Thanks. I picked up the tranny jack the other day, I love harbor Freight and their 20% off coupons!

Any issues with getting exhaust manifold pipe bolts off? Replace with new hardware and copper nuts?

Im trying to get ahead of possible problem areas that will take up a lot of time trying to solve.

Thanks. I remember using 3' of extensions and swivels trying to get at the top bell housing bolts on the Benz trannies. So it's the same?

I'd buy plenty of pb blaster and start spraying it down now. I'd have an assortment of swivels and extensions on hand, you never know what you're going to run into as you're doing it. Never underestimate the wife or girlfriend when it comes to lending a hand. :derp:

Thank you.

I also purchased a new rubber transmission mount.

What is the recommended ATF?

LOL, you're right. She will most likely be busy keeping after our 3.5 year old and 16 month old daughters (crazy monsters), she has helped in other minor roles on other auto repairs, and Im grateful!
