New purchase 2025 tahoe - warranty question

I agree with his point, that's why I want to make sure I'm clear. If I were to buy a new vehicle, I want the extended warranty to start when the factory ends. If it costs me 2k to extend from 60k to 100k, then I'm paying 2k for 40k miles. I might be better off looking at warranties that I can still buy before I hit 60k that cost 2k that give me more than 40k miles.

Haha I think we are saying the same thing. Ask the dealer you are inquiring about warranties to start the mileage at a specific amount (when factory runs out), date is relatively irrelevant if you ask/look for mileage based warranties. This should get you better coverage for what you are looking to cover.

I understand what you are saying, but let's say the dealer tells me a brand new vehicle has 3yr/60,000 on the engine/trans but I can buy a warranty to extend it to 100k, aren't I buying a 40k extension at that point (before even driving the vehicle)?

Or are you only referring to an add-on warranty? In that case, you'd want to buy it as close as possible to the current warranty expiring, unless I missed something obvious here.

Yes, you are only buying a 40K extension in that case. Prices go up as you near the end of your bumper to bumper warranty. How many miles a year do you drive?

As far as I know, GM won't even sell you a warranty unless you are still in the bumper to bumper warranty, or in some cases with a CPO vehicle.

I would rather buy it up front vs having to remember to buy one before warranty expires and have to get the vehicle inspected. Not that it is a big deal, but I just like getting things done all at once. However, I also want to get the best deal so if I had to get one later, I would consider it.

If your keeping a vehicle longer then the 3 year Bumper to Bumper Warranty its a huge risk to go without an extended warranty. The new vehicles are so heavily reliant on software and modules that if something simple like your heated drivers seat goes out and you need a new module your likely going to pay close to what an Extended Warranty would have cost you at purchase date. Dealership shop time is well over $100/hour now.

The other concern about aftermarket 3rd party warranties is they are usually not transparent when it comes down to EXACTLY what will be covered. I have often heard of horror stories about claims being denied with the 3rd party warranties but its much less often with GM OEM Extended coverage.

I buy GMPP the day of purchase because its cheaper, the coverage I buy is simply two more years on top of the OEM 3 year bumper to Bumper because I only keep vehicles 4-5 years. That way I'm always covered and if I sell the new buyer might get some GMPP coverage.

It didn't seem like the dealer I was talking to offered GMPP it looked to be a dealer specific warranty. For example, there weren't different plan options, it was only a single option for brand new vehicles.

Yes, you can buy from any dealer. I bought 3 GMPP's over the years from Black Cadillac and I didn't buy the vehicles from them. They were very easy to deal with. I would be a little nervous about a GM dealer that doesn't offer a GMPP. They must make way more money on non-GM policies.

I know for a fact you can by an extended warranty from a dealership other then the selling dealership because I have done exactly that on my previous vehicle. There was a guy on one of the forums who set up a special deal for forum members and I was able to save some money compared to what the selling dealership was offering. The extended warranty is with GM not the dealership.

I understand that, but why don't all dealerships offer this as an option I guess it must be to sell their own warranty instead of GMs warranty.

I plan to contact Todd, as many others have, and ask him what my options are....if I end up buying.

Yes thats exactly what I also believe is going on. The dealership makes a sweetheart deal with a 3rd party Extended Warranty Company then starts to push customers away from GMPP and into their 3rd Party Extended Warranty Plan. I wonder what GM thinks about that and how its set up in their dealership contract with GM. I cant see GM allowing that from an authorized dealer.

The other thing I see often times is the 3rd Party Warranty Plan will cover many things but when you drill down into the fine print they say they are allowed to make the repair with non OEM parts and sometimes even used parts. Where as GMPP uses OEM AC Delco parts.

So I found out today that some dealers don’t take 3rd party extended plans. Example. The dealer I am going to use cause it’s closer for work now than who I used to go to only takes GM extended plans. They don’t take day Zurich or whatever it’s called. So watch that. With my wrangler I actually have Zurich and the dealer I use takes it even though they sell the mopar one so it all varies. I have had no issues with the 2 times I used it with my jeep but this was before I understood shopping it around. Luckily the dealer I bought it from actually didn’t **** me. lol hit when I bought my wagoneer I shopped it and got the mopar max plan cause the wagoneer is a rolling computer and paid literally 6 grand less than starting price from dealer. Nuts. They almost took a heart attack when I told them and showed them the price I got.

With our new Tahoe I’m going with the gm platinum from Todd. It’s way way cheaper than I thought it was going to be. Knapp quoted me a bit more.

My dealer is offering a 10 yr 150K mile warranty that they claim is better than the GM bumper to bumper platinum warranty for approximately 4200 (coveres everything but what's noted below0 - trying to gauge feedback on that company as well as reasonability of that price. If i go onto Knapp for the GMPP Platinum i come up with closer to 2500 for 8 yr 100K mile for my 2025 suburban.

I'm pretty sure there is a lot of stuff in that list that the GMPP Warranty covers.

So I just got a quote from Knapp that was SIGNIFICANTLY less than my dealer is offering. Question though: is it best to use the standard warranty and then just buy one of these warranties after a few years?

Edit: I see people recommend buying now ba later. That said I can’t find anything more than 100k miles. I need 8 years/120k miles.
