Oil leak rear main seal maybe????

I just did this today, and that was the exact prognosis. The rear cover gasket gers flattened, and hard. Leaks even with bolts tight. Mine had a dry RMS, but the entire area around and above were wet with oil. Runs down the back, then out the bottom. I did the pan gasket 2 years ago thinking...

What weight oil do you use in the South?

I use 5w-30 year round. Even.......in........-20F!!!!!! And have never had an issue. I stopped using 0w-20 110k miles ago. In a hot climate I would go with 5w-30 if it were my vehicle. To each their own.

Maintenance items for the win and the joys of rust free work!

Just got done with the RMS.......and it was fine. The housing gasket was leaking like a stuck pig......oil everywhere, crankshaft was dry. Put in a new billet oil bar bell as well since I was there. The process was straightforward......Basically remove EVERYTHING from the engine back and...

    This truck is incredible

Wow! Glad you are OK! The engineering in the newer stuff is pretty impressive. They are built to crumple and absorb energy.......which yours definitely did. Also why they get totalled easier, but to not have horrible injuries is totally worth it. They make new ones everyday. Metal can be...

New 2024 Yukon - long term rust prevention and rubber conditioning

If they are required to recycle a portion of the water used. It's in that. Salt doesn't settle out like sand or other solids. You then get recycled rinse water blown up under your vehicle that most likely has dissolved salt and other corrosive road chemicals in it.

Maintenance items for the win and the joys of rust free work!

Good info. I think they were replaced prior to me taking ownership, but it doesn't hurt to have them on hand. I purposely keep 5/8 silicone hose (plus other sizes) and clamps in my Murphy Kit in case I need to make a quick repair. Years of field service has honed the MacGyver skills. Also...

Maintenance items for the win and the joys of rust free work!

I remember a customer years back that had an old crown vic (mid to late 90's) that had a RMS, or oil pan gasket, leak so bad the whole underside of the car was continually rust-proofed. It even covered the rear bumper and trunk face by the lights with an oil film. He lived on a gravel road...

Maintenance items for the win and the joys of rust free work!

Yeesh....I hate leaks. I have been dealing with this getting progressively worse for the last 3 years.......so I've had time to work up to it. It doesn't look fun, but hopefully with a lift and second set of hands it will go easier. It may be easier to just return the parts to Amazon and buy...

Help diagnosing a rhythmic thumping noise when driving.

Yes, that was my experience. So I got the joy of doing it twice. I would assume that's not the case for you.

Maintenance items for the win and the joys of rust free work!

LOL. It's not very often in the midwest that big/little items cooperate without heat, or vibration, persuasion. I'm going to bask in this for awhile......

Is it possible a needle bearing fell down into the cap during assembly? That will also cause what you are explaining.......I know from experience.

    2017 Yukon Denali

In theory, yes electrical issues should show up right away if it let the smoke out of something, but that's not always the case. It may have weakened a component, but not killed it. Fortunately, most items are protected with fuses for overload, but not reverse power. I'm not sure if the ECMs...

Maintenance items for the win and the joys of rust free work!

I've decided to do a career change which means I gave up a company truck and will now get paid to use my own vehicle. My 2008 Denali will go from beater/overlanding/extra vehicle to a daily driver now. Other than it being old-man gold in color, I really enjoy it. So, I decided to tackle some...

    Trans/Transfercase fluid change

You have the 4L80 / 4L85E trans I believe. It's a good setup with the 6.0L and can take quite a bit of abuse, but no need to find out how much. If the looks brown, DEFINITELY change it out like @tom3 and @Sam Harris stated. I'd drop the pan and replace the filter. If there's nothing sitting...

what useful items do you carry in your SUV?

I usually don't carry much other than. A leatherman for daily bee-bopping. But, when going on a trip more than a couple hours, I pack the Murphy Kit: Code reader, Klein toolbag with an assortment of wrenches, pliers, screw drivers, picks, sockets and ratchets, vice grips, etc. Then I usually...

Help diagnosing a rhythmic thumping noise when driving.

The only time I've experienced that was a bad u-joint. Usually the one at the rear pinion. Did you remove the shaft and manipulate them by hand? They can be sneaky to diagnose by spinning wheels, etc.

    New to me

Welcome from WI! You will like that vehicle. I have a 2017 6.2L with 150k on it. It's been a very good, dependable vehicle. Ask any questions you have, lots of good peeps here.

    MAP senor weirdness

Yep, just looked it up. Per the GM number it's for a 2001-05 6.6L duramax. So much for the Amazon vehicle filter. I then Googled the part number on the sensor itself and came up with many generic options that listed the same fitment. I'm definitely frustrated with Chinese knock-off parts...

    MAP senor weirdness

I'm looking for some advice. I was being proactive and replaced the O2 sensors and the MAP sensor today. 2008 Denali, 183k. After install of new GM MAP sensor, the truck kind of ran rough on start up, but I figured it would smooth out. The truck ran well going down the road, but anytime I...

GM to stop sharing data with LexisNexis and insurers

I agree with you 100%. I find it funny that you have to PAY for Onstar, AND they get to glean any info they want, 'need', or can sell. Talk about a scam...... To your other points, I've had that lurking, uneasy, feeling ever since Onstar was a thing initially, but more so with the...

New 2024 Yukon - long term rust prevention and rubber conditioning

Just get some fluid film, or woolwax, (both available on Amazon). 1 to 2 gallons will do the whole truck. Buy the professional application gun with different nozzles ans hoses to reach rockers, doors, fenders, etc. Set aside a whole day if this is your first rodeo to scope out the correct...

Likely a dumb question, but here it goes. I'm fairly new to Chevrolet, 61 and just bought my first 4 for work and

Poor engine oil change schedules is the most likely cause. Vans were probably contactor or delivery under lease = change at oil life indicator (approx 7500 miles). Police cars may have been the same. If they did less than oil life monitor miles, they have TONS of idle time followed by hard...

Issue reading trans dip stick / overfilled

The trans needs to be checked with engine running in Park. Pull the dipstick, wipe, reinstall for about 2 seconds, pull again and read it. Off level can change it to read too high or too low. Same as side to side level. If it's biased towards the passenger side, it will read fuller, if it's...
