Beam cutoff on those LEDs is pretty good, better than expected. From a quick drive around the block I'd say visibility is considerably better than the old Silverstars. I probably need to aim the headlights as well as I've never done that. Doubt it's possible in my driveway though as it's pretty...
I installed Silverstar Ultras maybe 1.5 years ago. The driver side burned out recently. I don't drive the suburban much anymore, especially at night, so I'd be surprised if that bulb had more than 100 hrs of use. Pretty pitiful life.
Put in some LEDs from Amazon as a replacement since they cost...
Finally got around to installing the stuff in the rear. Put in new control arms (upper and lower) and Bilstein 4600s. Despite the appearance the old shocks still had some life left in them - not totally shot at 160k miles, although the rebound was probably 50% slower than the new Bilsteins. Old...
Yeah I'd love to hear a review. There's a headlight thread in the exterior section but most of the posts are pretty old and there's not much on LEDs.
These are the ones I was considering: https://www.xenonpro.com/h11-low-beams-led-headlights-kit
Would've been ~$160 for a low beam kit that...
One of my headlights burned out so I put in a pair of Silverstar Ultras. It was not enjoyable driving at night with the old bulbs so I'm happy that low beam output seems to be substantially improved. Around town at least. The real test will be when I get up to some dark, higher speed mt roads...
No experience with 5100s on a truck, but when I put them [B8s] on a sedan the recommendation was to either remove the bump stop or significantly cut it down. Reason being was the strut had internal bump stops and adding an external could contribute to a harsh ride. Not sure if that's the case...
I ended up buying a set of 4600s from CarParts.com (front and rear). Got 10% back from a Chase card offer and they have free shipping. I decided not to go 5100s as I don't really want a lift (or to mess around with the setup of one), just a decent damper. Once those get in I'll return the OEM...
I didn't want to lift as 99% of my driving is on pavement and better handling from a lower CoG is desirable. However I got the rest of my suspension parts in today (in a completely destroyed shipping box, but at least nothing is damaged/missing) and just from looking at them and dry fitting some...
I have not done Imogene but it's on my list. Next time we're in the area I'll try to convince my wife to give it a go. It's a 6hr drive one way from us right now so realistically we'd need to make it at least a 4-5+ day road trip so we're not in the truck the majority of our waking hours each...
I'll have to check on the height next time I'm in a parking lot. My driveway is rather steep and when I'm backed in, the rear is several inches higher.
The control arms I got were half the price of genuine GM and even if they only last 50k miles, I'm perfectly fine with that. I'm not planning...
Correct. I cross referenced the RPO codes on the ACDelco site. That's how I found the rear Z71 shock as well (540-630). Initially I said I wanted a softer ride, but now I'm just shooting for more or less factory Z71 ride quality. Although my inner 'cheapskate' won out and I skipped the springs...
Did your truck have a significant change in ride height with the new suspension? I'm wondering if I can reuse the springs to save a couple hundred bucks. Also are any of the bolts torque to yield (i.e. can they be safely reused)?
That p/n chart is very helpful btw, I've probably referenced it...
Looks like CarID has pre-built ACDelco strut assemblies. I wonder if these are worth a shot. I.e if the quality is decent enough they won't have to be replaced in 10k miles. Tempting to minimize install time but I absolutely do not want to do a suspension job twice in a year...
Yeah I just pasted them into google sheets so I could search them easier/lookup my own RPO codes. 14k total (with some duplicates), probably why they didn't show readily before.
I thought it'd be more helpful to know all my RPO codes, but it doesn't seem to be the case [yet]. For example I...
Adding parts to my rockauto cart to refresh my suspension and noticed a lot of the products have fitment descriptions with 3 character alpha-numerics like "6tb,7tb,6tf,... etc".
Are these RPO codes? They don't seem familiar and nothing comes up when I plug them into an RPO decoder.
they were just held on with double sided tape. I used a steamer (and also poured near boiling water on them) to soften the adhesive, and then a plastic scraper to lift the edge to the point where I could pull them off. Heavy fishing line also works to saw off the mouldings but that leaves a lot...
No changes to the build itself but I did reinstall one of the 2nd row seats a few months ago. With the camper folded up there's plenty of room for 2nd row seats, with the seat folded (as pictured) there's plenty of sleeping room.
If I were to do this build again, I would probably just make a...
Was the shaft spinning when you tried to tighten the nut? I installed Bilstein B8s (I think the same as 5100s) on a sedan several years back and had that same problem. IIRC I had to clamp the shaft in a bench vise to hold it.
Awesome, thanks for the detailed list, that'll make shopping much easier.
I wouldn't mind a prebuilt strut assembly but from what I've seen there are no decent shocks available in those kits. And I have no doubts about the longevity of them either - my folks have an early 2000s Volvo that sees...
This is what's on the truck now...based on the condition I'd say they're original. They don't look like any shock I'm familiar with, but from googling it seems they might be KYB.
We'll leave pavement for camping trips but don't really go on anything rougher than I could with my old audi allroad with 7" of ground clearance. 4600 looks like a good option.

Any product recommendations for a 2011 Z71 Suburban? The truck is at 160k and is probably overdue for at least struts and shocks. It seems to be crashing pretty hard over bumps lately. I want to maintain stock ride height (or very close to it) and a reasonably comfortable ride. I never approach...
