Changing rotted backing plates/dust shields

Noticed something scary today
cadillac dust plates I've gone thru the nice lengthy dust plate replacement but I'm not clear on one thing... if you take the rear end and pull the axle shaft pin and c clip for the one side.. how do you get the other axle out ... is a c clip accessible for the drivers side ??- jaysandy
