    I could maybe see the vacuum leak theory if the purge solenoid opened while refueling but even then it would still be pulling air through all the fuel vapors in the tank,which would be alot especially while pumping gas into the tank.

    I am not certain how a metal flake came out of the filter by just inverting it. The large hole in the center of the filter is the outlet, which means it is the "clean" side of the filter. Unless your filter doesn't have an Anti Drain Back valve there shouldn't be a way for the metal to get back...

    Obviously these cutaways are graphic renderings but you can see where the reluctor wheel is that the ABS sensor reads and it looks like a perfect path for the grease to get into the bearings IMO.
