Just had our 26 Terrain Denali windshield replaced last week by Safelite, they did a great job and replaced the windshield sensors and even re-installed my oem style dash cam! The invoice said something about a new module was installed and the bill was around $900 which of course our insurance paid all of it. They also had to calibrate the sensor(s) or I would have had to take it to the dealer to calibrate, our insurance company also confirmed that they had to be calibrated either by Safelite or the dealer.

According to my workshop service manual, the rain sensor is a single use item and is supposed to be removed and discarded, then replaced with a new one when the windshield is replaced. It must also be installed with no air gap between it and the glass.

Removal:
22. Windshield Outside Moisture/Ambient Light and Humidity Sensor (1) >> Remove and DISCARD

Installation:
5. Windshield Outside Moisture/Ambient Light and Humidity Sensor (1) >> Install NEW

Maybe whenever a new one is installed the vehicle calibrates it to the glass? I'm going to order a new one and see what happens.
Can this be replaced by the user/owner or limited to dealers/installers?

I called the glass company that did the install and while I wasn't able to speak to the tech/installer, the office manager did speak with them (put me on hold) and told me 'they've never heard of this issue before' but would be willing to look into it if I dropped my vehicle off.

That type of response tells me they are not aware of this sensor being a one time use component and mine was likely not replaced and the same one is being used which explains why it is not working.

Please test the rain sensor after a few days and let us know if everything works properly.

Just tested them and yes they work just fine when spraying the windshield with water. Probably would have never checked/used them as we live in Arizona where it NEVER rains!

Safelite is coming today between 1 and 6pm to install a new windshield in my 2021 Suburban. I don't have a problem with whatever glass they install, it has to be decent if they offer a warranty. I have a HUD and all of the sensors. They recalibrate all of that and are one of the largest glass install companies. I have used them before for a couple of other vehicles and have been satisfied.
Between 1 and 6? They must be covering their lunch break and afternoon siesta.

The tech called at 3pm and said he was on his way. He arrived at 3:30. He was very nice and professional. They had a small problem doing the pre scan for the camera and sensor, battery was running down. Not sure if it was their equipment because I had put in a new battery a few months ago. Took a while to get the camera and sensors to recalibrate but it finally went and works perfect. They did a great job.

Everything works perfectly. We had some storms yesterday and wipers worked properly with rain sensor.

Update on my issue with the rain sensors, I took it in to the windshield installer, they looked at the sensor and said they'd replace it. They replaced the sensor and tested, several time, with a hose, wipers activated when water was sensed.

I have at least 3 rock chips on my windshield right now. They're all no bigger than a half a dime and semi-hard to see, but they're there.

Given how aggressive my lifted AT4 is with the 14 wide tires, one of those rock chips was caused by a lifted truck... go figure.

Update: My replacement rain sensor arrived yesterday, I installed it this morning, and the intermittent wipers are now working correctly. So, if you are having a windshield replaced I'd ask them beforehand if they will be replacing the sensor, and if not I'd have one available and ready to hand to them so it does get replaced. It apparently truly is a one use item and it will be a LOT easier for them to replace it when the windshield is replaced instead of doing it yourself after the fact. Total price for a genuine GM sensor and harness (Part #85880852) for a 2023 Suburban including shipping was $58. They also sell it without the harness at a slightly lower cost.
