I agree because I have rebuilt a lot of starters. If you are going to take it apart , just to clean it. I would trade it for a reman or a new one. A starter is a part that can leave you stranded at exactly the worst time possible .I know from experience.
I'm sure you have the 5.7 engine? Any modifications that you know of? Mine is heavily modified so I know I'm going to get crapy mileage but I had a 96 model and I think I got maybe 14 - 16 mpg on a good day.
I kinda jumped ahead a little bit, but the first thing that came to mind is the actuator on the front axle. I always check that first because everything ties in with that and what you describe with the switch is exactly what it does.
