And just how many people in this thread, that give a damn, happen to have a cell phone or mobile gps unit. Just don't be caught acting stupid. Additionally, don't talk to police if they start to investigate you. As for why you shouldn't talk to police, go to YouTube and search Don't Talk To Police. Look for the video that is 48 minutes long. It's from a law professor at Regents University in Virginia Beach, Virginia. There's also a surprise at ~ 27:30 when a Virginia Beach Police Detective starts talking.

I usually steer clear of these opinionated conversations, but I feel as though I need to present my case-in-chief. Frankly, I don’t really care if they are tracking me, or collecting data from my vehicle. I have nothing to hide! The government, and likewise, the police, can find out a lot more about someone from ones activity online and all those “connected” devices they use, then what Onstar gathers from their vehicle. The amount of times that I have used Onstar in an emergency situation far outweighs the idea of them collecting some form of data. Let them do it if they want to, just don’t bother me about it.

I would have to agree with you here. Every device we use these days seems to somehow be "connected" to everything else. Unless you want to live in fear under a rock for the rest of your life, you're just going to have to face this fact. Going along with the second part of your post - I think the other point to make is that everyone should simply know their constitutional rights.

ChevyFreak, This wasn't supposed to be a BigBro, neurotic, opinionated, political thread, just want to stick to the topic of the 'Agreement' update, and maybe what owners are doing.

I've had OnStar since it became available, and I don't keep my bus/pers vehicles for more than a couple/few years. But now, for the first time I'm looking at my 3 ton Tahoe that can and WILL be used against me whether I agree to 'self incrimination' or not. Guilty until proved innocent, Tahoe held harmless.

After all. To criticise OnStar is to criticise the very 'Heartbeat of America', OnStar being owned by GM being owned by the UAW being owned by (better quit while I'm ahead). :)

Buy a used one then. I did, and did not get any onstar "update" from GM although I know they can still track my vehicle.

Always humorous to me that stories along the lines of crap like this always center around how an innocent person was convicted through no wrong doing on their part. Never any stories about how the combination of the amber alert system and gps tracking allowed for the capture and prosecution of a child abductor.

I can live with a few solicitations if it means we can catch even one additional dirtbag like this.

I wonder if there is a way to remove some wires from the connector to disable collection of certain data

I want some way to recalibrate my car so it thinks it has huge wheels/tires (so it thinks it's going twice as fast as it is)

Mmm, unplugging on star won't achieve much ... look up EDR if you really want to understand how this works.

The OnStar unit archives all the data, unplugging the cell antenna connector won't help because the next time you plug it in(in an emergency) it spews out a data burst from memory.

The VSS wire would cut speed and distance info, the farka gps connector would cut GPS info.

I wonder if there is a way to remove some wires from the connector to disable collection of certain data

Do EDR's download data to the ECM? or a central location?
Or do the EDR's keep the data at the sensor for crash forensics?
I guess the OBD would download from all the different sensors.

Oh I don't care about an EDR, that's fine with me. I don't want Onstar selling my info to marketing agencies to figure out how to make a profit on a service that's already charging too much.

I don't subscribe to OnStar. After reading their updated Privacy Statement that takes effect December 1, 2011, I just called 1-888-466-7827 to get the "data connection" to my vehicle deactivated, and was told that someone from their "Customer Loyalty Team" would have to call me on Monday, September 19, 2011 between 8:00 A.M. and 11:00 P.M. EST to discuss the matter!!!!!!!

Geez, that ought to be an interesting phone conversation. I don't have OnStar, and it sounds like they're going to try and get me to subscribe, rather than deactivate the "data connection" to my vehicle.

I received a call from OnStar this morning telling me that the "data connection" to my vehicle had been deactivated, and the lights would go off on my mirror.

Well, guess what. I just checked the mirror and every damn light is still lit up! So I called OnStar back a few minutes ago and was told it would take up to 14 days for the deactivation to occur. Something tells me I'll be calling OnStar again in two weeks, and getting confirmation that the "data connection" has really been deactivated is going to turn into a federal case. :upyours:

How many of y'all that are against this has a twitter account?

What the hell is Twitter? Or Facebook? Or any of that other crap that people without a life waste their time on?

The answer is: Not Me!

Anyone know if the fuse panel has a fuse just for OnStar? If so, I'll pull the fuse out and shoot it dead with my .38 special. :gr_guns:

Let's quit messing around with which wire to cut and figure out how to bring down a satellite that has a big blue O on it.
