Transmission Temp Expections

What transmission temperature should I expect under normal driving conditions and also while towing? I'll be towing a 4K pound camper across country and through the Rockies and will keep an eye out on the transmission temp but I have no idea what temp is OK/expected and what is a red flag. Thanks.

Anybody out there have a feel for what would be a normal transmission temperature while towing? What about a red flag temp?

I towed from Missouri to South Carolina and back last week. Pulled a 6400 lb 32' long travel trailer through the mountains. My temps stayed in the 190s the entire way. Would bump up to 198ish going through the mountains. I would start to get concerned if you get into the 220+ area.

My variation was only about 4 degrees, usually 2 when going up a decent hill.

Good luck and happy towing. Watch out for the idiots in cars who are in a hurry to get no where.

I've towed a 5k lb trailer up some pretty steep grades. Stayed below 210.

I just got back from towing a 4500 lb trailer from phx, az to durango, co up and down some 6-8% grades. Going up a pass in Payson, az my temp got up to 241 and I was starting to get nervous so I pulled over at the top and it took about 10 minutes to drop back to 190. I would really like to see below 200 but on the rest of my trip it was regularly in the 220s and got to 230 a couple times. After I got home I researched some transmission coolers and ordered a Hayden 679 to run in addition to the little factory one. I looked at the B&M 70266, Derale 13403, Tru-Cool 40k LPD47391 but the Hayden at $42 from rock auto seemed like the best buy for the money. I hope this helps stay below 200 while going up hills.

Here's a video I found to install a secondary transmission cooler with the factory one.

You can't beat the tru-cool 40k BTU.

My temps get to about 205* with approx the same trailer specs. I'd rather see them below 190* but with the Yukon running at about 210 (!) according to the gauge, that's about as good as it gets.

When I tow my 14' single axle trailer with my commercial grade zero turn, it runs right at 190*. When I use the same trailer to haul a ton of rock or a couple yards of mulch, it runs at 190*. I used a 18' aluminum car hauler and transported a SXS from Lincoln, Arkansas to St. Louis and temperatures stayed at 195* doing 80mph.

A couple of weeks ago I was pulling my 12 ft single axle enclosed trailer with two Harley's inside, a couple of times in traffic she got up to 214, a little high I think, most of the time was around 185-190. Mine has the stock SSV Equipment, but I'm thinking about adding something bigger just for insurance.

I was towing a 6900 lb trailer on Thursday - transmission overheated twice. 2015 Yukon XL Denali with BBP tune.
