not that it's relevant here, but they put the 8.6 the dealer parts guy called it when I got new axle seals in the 4x4 hybrid ones. it's switch able to 2wd.I didn't count the bolts.

my thinking is they did it for weight and the gear ratio. they wanted that 3.08 gear. the high gear in the tranny is only 0.7 something. so it turns more rpm than the standard one. the rate them decent tq, but I doubt anyone is towing over the rated weight or adding hp. it's basically a suv shaped mini van lol.

the older escalade, like 08 09 have the 3.42 gear and the bigger rear. so I think it was just a gear ratio spit thing when gm put what in what. 99% will live with the smaller rear end well past any warranty. I do wonder about my little 8.6 on decell. tons and tons of regen braking on a very small heal and when I did fluid at 136k ish. there was more metal on the mag than I've ever seen in a not failing rear end haha. but it's dead quiet and the locker works. so eh.. roll on till it gets whiney.

I have acquired a new to me 9.5" 14 bolt for my 14 denali awd
It is a used rear end with approx 85K on it (probably I hope)
Any ways, I am paranoid about my G80 8.6" stock rear end that is in excellent shape
as I'm going to be towing heavy..
My question is what actual differential is in this rear end ???
Is it similar (weak) like the G80 in the 10 bolt ????
Would it be advised to install a Yukon Duragrip diff in it before I go thru
all the work to install in my Yuk ???
( I have found a good deal on a new Duragrip is the reason)

Thanks for the Input !!
it certainly couldn't hurt, my silverado has the 9.5 14 bolt I don't care for the 3.08 but it seems fine
and the denali has the 8.6 10 bolt 3.42 which is going to get a eaton tru trac and a new pinion sometime this spring I am 99% sure I have worn it out, the only reason it has not broke yet is because of the 40/60 split in my opinion anyway. I have broke a few 8.6 rwd g80's, the eaton never broke but i did wear the bearings out.
I would be curious to see how the install goes I might consider doing the same

I have the detroit truetac helical units in my Monte Carlo SS and my stepside
chevy 1500 9" rear ends.. They are awesome. Strong, dependable and quiet ...
I just happened to come across a new Yukon Brand Clutch type for my new to me
9.5" 14 bolt at a great price....
They don't have as long a service life in a truck compared to a car, that's why they advertise them as rebuildable and the comments and reviews bear this out.

12-Bolt in your K2 Silvy.

i think @swathdiver picked up one or the AXN not too long ago
Yes, all of my trucks have these AXN axles. The one for the Yukon is sitting on my workbench still. Was going to start on it today but rain is in the forecast again. Maybe tomorrow. Can't wait to get it done. Putting in 3.73s as well, bringing the drivetrain to NHT like specs for towing. My pickup trucks came with them from the factory as they have 6.2 motors.

Here are some photos of when I regeared the "12 bolt" axle I mentioned in my previous post. I took some other measurements, and even weighed the differential. I'd never regeared an axle, so was trying to document as much as possible. I even welded the axle tubes. :) That square tube/threaded rod contraption is a homemade case spreader to facilitate installing the shims to achieve the preload.

Well, with the info given it looks like the 14 bolt 9.5" rear that I have acquired
will be strong enough in stock form...
I haven't even really inspected it internally yet.. But if everything looks
good I'm gonna Send It !!!!!!!!!!! and not worry about upgrading it unless something
is fubared in it
